Memories from the 70s, 80s, 90s

i thought that as well, but i think the photo maybe too early. it was dated 1971 on th esite i found it, but it could be any date between 71-78. I think the metro opened in 80-81?

The photograph is later than 1971 or we wouldn't have had the East Stand which was finished in 1973.  My guess is that it's between 1975 and 1980 but I couldn't do better than that, St James Hall was knocked down after 1975.

Here's a photograph of St James Hall which was replaced by the Metro.

if your certain that the wrestling hall was knocked down in 75 and its not in the pic, hen the pic is 75-78. im pretty sure the leazes end was demolished in 78.

i was lead to belive the game to celebrate the opening of the east stand was a friendley agsist benfica in 1971. but i suppose it could have ben 73, however macdonald told me it was his first ever game at sjp pre season. i was defo there in the east stand. The stories dont seem to add up tho.

We played Benfica during August 1971 and I stood in the Gallowgate so can't help with anything around that game.

Are you getting two games mixed up?  You're right about the Leazes going in 1978 so it looks like the photograph is between 1975 and 1978.  I was looking at the scoreboard for help with the date but that doesn't help at all.

If you had to pick the best XI from each of them decades which do you reckon would of been the best.  You would have someone like Pedro who played in 2 of the 3 decades.

my 3 teams(80's, 90's and noughties) would be as follows,  only picked one player in one team so Beardsley is in the 80's side and Sheare is in the 00's side.  All 3 sides look strong, 80's front 5 are tremendous,  then you've the entertainers minus Beardsley and then Sir Bobby's team.

80's team

                                      Beasant

        Anderson        Roeder      Jackson        Wharton

                                      McCreery

                      Terry Mac                      Waddle

                                        Gazza

                    Beardsley                      Keegan

90's team

                                    Pav

        Venison      Howey        Albert        Beresford

                Gillespie      Clark      Lee        Ginola

                            Cole          Ferdinand

Was a tight call between Clarky and Batty but i used to love Clarky and put him in on his superb form in our promotion to the PL.

00's team

                                    Given

        Beye        Woodgate        Taylor        Bernard

            Solano        Speed          Dyer        Robert

                            Shearer        Bellamy

Bloke has just picked 33 players & your griping about 1 of them.  Lets see your team 00's

I posed the exact team as Binnsy's on another forum the other day. Only difference is I don't think I picked another centre half as I couldn't separate the rest of the dross.

The East Stand was fully opened for the match with West Ham in April '73. It was partially open for the Cup match with Luton just after New Year, but the completion was delayed due to a builders strike.

The Leazes End was indeed knocked down in Summer '78.

I got this info from the book Fortress St James by club historian Paul Joannou.

Work on the Metro started in 1974, by the way, although it wasn't opened till 1980.

Both only here for one season but Bassong and Faye would both have been ahead of Taylor for me. Other than that, the team's spot on.

Course they would have. Both are light years ahead of Taylor.

yes but i didn't really think someone playing 30 games justifies selection into a team of the decade!

No-one would argue with Woodgate and he can't have played many more than 30.

true but i put Woody in as he is the best defender i've seen for NUFC and i think he managed a bit more than 30 games think he played 36 games.

36 in all comps yeah.

Looking over the noughties: Woodgate, Taylor, Distin, Hughes, O'Brien, Bramble, Dabizas, Bassong, Colo, Marcelino, Goma, Faye, Rozenhal, Cacapa etc.........Woodgate & Bassong/Faye on talent i guess despite limited games.

I was thinking the other day, what a perfectly balanced first choice midfield that was that Bobby had. Solano, Speed, Dyer and Robert - a great mix of everything in there, with the class to cause good teams problems. Dyer and Robert could be frustrating for different reasons but when Dyer was on song he was one of the players I've enjoyed watching most in recent times - there were matches when he must have covered an unbelievable amount of ground. Unfortunately there weren't enough of those matches if you look at his years here as a whole.

Dyers lost time hit us hard, every time he got going he seemed to break down sadly. On another forum a Spurs fan has taken it on himself to decide our team of the decade. He chose Carr/O;Brien/Taylor/Bernard and Dyer/Speed/Parker/Solano in midfield. He also said Woodgate shouldnt qualify due to lack of games, he does however make his Spurs team though ;D

man citeh, easter monday........

getting off the train at stalybridge as one of the cops on the train let slip we'd be escorted straight to the ground. the sight of half a dozen cops trying to stop about 200 of us was quite funny, then walking down the hill into staly a cop van pulls alongside us, the female driver can't believe her eyes and runs over a traffic island and bollard while gawping at us. then the other cop in the van. gets out, runs over to a pub, (about 9am) brays on te door till the landlord opens a window, the landlord is begged by the cop to allow us in for drinks as his bosses reckon it's best to have us in the pub than wandering the streets.
