Guest firetotheworks
Jenas had a good half season and then rapidly went downhill. Dyer had imo 2/3 good seasons and then was our best attacking threat under Souness when he wasn't injured. Speed and Dyer was a much better partnership too, they complimented each other nicely. Yorkie
I'd genuinely like to know why people are putting Souness' appointment above Ashley's arrival, in terms of the last question. Aye Souness was absolutely horrific and destroyed near everything that Bobby had spent five years developing, but he's not the reason we are where we are now. Certainly, his appointment marked the beginning of a gradual slide (that was aided by numerous failings by the club as a whole)... but i'd honestly say things were salvageable until Ashley came in and chucked Keegan and Wise into a melting pot. Even Roeder managed to drag us up to 7th post-Souness. We weren't a lost cause by any stretch of the imagination.

bowlingcrofty
Rob Lee, give me a break. Aye - bit of an odd choice I agree but I loved the bloke and thought he played some of his best stuff under Robson when he played alongside Speed for those couple of years. He was fantastic then. Even Roeder managed to drag us up to 7th post-Souness. We weren't a lost cause by any stretch of the imagination. It's like that old proverb, 'listen for the creak of the bow, not the rush of the arrow.' The slide all started with that appointment, and yes it was salvageable when Ashley came in, but the rebuilding already had to be done by that point. Yes we slid out of the league under Ashley's reign, but it felt at that time when Souness came in that we were at the furthest point in time away from getting where we wanted to be again, and that's exactly what's happened. Even when Ashley came in and we started buying players and things were going OK for a bit it was obvious that our stock had fallen drastically, we still couldn't attract the types of players that we needed. We've now fell much further obviously, but it was that initial slide where there was literally like a 2 week gap from playing like a team that needed a few tweaks, to being the same team without any catalyst, without a good manager, without the togetherness. Then there was the investment with Souness after Robson had only been able to bring in Butt and Milner, which made me feel sick thinking about what Robson could have done with that money. Ashley's appointment was worse in terms of effect, but Souness's was worse for me because of the quick chasm in what we'd been to what we were, and knowing it would take an age to get back there. I think, because it's realistic that we could get back to being a mediocre midtable prem team, as we were before Ashley's arrival. However, it'll be virtually impossible for us to get back where we were before Bobby left.

Guest firetotheworks
I still think Woodgate's easily the best bit of business we've ever done. We'll probably never be able to buy or sell from Real Madrid ever again, mind.

TRon
I'm scratching my head trying to think who would be the best midfielder of the last decade, the fact no central midfielder really springs to mind says quite a lot.
Guest firetotheworks
Speed is the only central midfield choice really.
Heron
1) BEST TOON DEFENDER FROM THE LAST DECADE - Jonathon Woodgate; Injury prone but appeared to have the most quality. 2) BEST MIDFIELDER - Nolberto Solano; Intelligent, accurate passer, Creative, Imaginitive, many assists, Peruvian, Legend. 3) BEST STRIKER - Alan Shearer; 206 sums it up despite the majority being from the 90's. 4) BEST OVERALL PLAYER - Gary Speed - Strong in a tackle, good in the air, could use both feet, was intelligent. 5) BEST MANAGER - Sir Bobby Robson; Wise, Enthusiastic, Passionate, words can't describe how good this man was and how badly he was eventually treated. 6) MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER - Shola Ameobi; I hate to say it as well, but Shola - I believe, has a great potential to score lots of goals, only he is too clumsy and non-forward thinking to be a great striker. 7) WE SHOULD HAVE SIGNED...Ronaldo instead of Hugo Viana. Viana was good but didn't really get a chance to cut it for us and Ronaldo adapted to our game some-what better in the end. Despite hating him for ManUre I've always enjoyed watching Ronaldo play - he's the most exciting player to play in the Premier League for some time. 8) WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE LET GO...Nolberto Solano the first time round. 9) BEST HOME GAME...Too many to choose from theirs been that many good ones; but I loved 4-3 vs ManUre and the 2-1 over the SMB's when Shearer scored from that free-kick and Bellamy rushed through to score. The 3-2 as well when Shola scored twice (?) purely for the emotional roller-coaster. 10) BEST AWAY / NEUTRAL GAME...My favourite away games were Marseille - because it was my first foreign away and the atmosphere was electric and Sheffield United because we won and I had a mint day out. Neutrally - the testimonial for Shearer and Sir Bobbys Charity match for sentimental reasons. 11) WORST GAME...Sunderland away last season, enough said. 12) BEST GOAL SCORED...Just because I am biased towards Shearer I'll say his vs Everton other than that though Robert's 2 vs Spurs. 13) WORST GOAL CONCEDED - All of them - (couldn't think of one). 15) BEST HAIRCUT - Don't know. 16) WORST HAIRCUT - Andy Carroll - all of them...You're from Gateshead not Harlem Andy. 17) BEST LOOKING PLAYER - People would probably say Robert or Dyer.... 18) UGLIEST PLAYER - Acuna...maybe. 19) DIRTIEST PLAYER - Bowyer...probably. 20) BEST STARTING XI OF THE DECADE - Given, Beye, Woodgate, Taylor, Bernard, Solano, Speed, Lee, Robert, Shearer, Bellamy 21) PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS - MORE /LESS / EQUALLY SUCCESSFUL - More successful - back in the top flight and challenging in Europe. 22) IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING FROM THE LAST DECADE - Sir Bobby's sacking.
Guest firetotheworks
While I agree about the sentiment of getting Ronaldo over Viana, I still think he would have been a flop for us and then went on to be a superstar elsewhere or had his career destroyed by us. ads
1) BEST TOON DEFENDER FROM THE LAST DECADE Woody 2) BEST MIDFIELDER Nobby 3) BEST STRIKER Shearer 4) BEST OVERALL PLAYER Given 5) BEST MANAGER Sir Bobby 6) MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER Owen, Kluivert, Duff, Viana 7) WE SHOULD HAVE SIGNED... Michael Carrick 8) WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE LET GO... Scotty Parker 9) BEST HOME GAME The 4-3 win over Man United at SJP 10) BEST AWAY / NEUTRAL GAME Either the 3-1 at Arsenal or the 3-2 at Spurs or the 4-1 at the mackems 11) WORST GAME The 5-1 Birmingham game or the 4-1 Portsmouth shambles. 12) BEST GOAL SCORED Oba Martins at Spurs 13) WORST GOAL CONCEDED The one at Villa Park 15) BEST HAIRCUT :colo: 16) WORST HAIRCUT Step forward Andy Carroll, you're from Gateshead man, not flamin' Compton 17) BEST LOOKING PLAYER Probably Laurent Robert, especially in his underpants. 18) UGLIEST PLAYER Oh god, take your pick, Andy O'Brien, Lee Bowyer, Nicky Butt, James Milner, Nikos Dabizas... 19) DIRTIEST PLAYER It's gotta be Shearer. Although from another decade, Neil Lennon's head will testify that. 20) BEST STARTING XI OF THE DECADE Toughie. Given, Beye, Taylor, Woodgate, Bernard, Solano, Lee, Speed, Robert, Shearer, Bellamy 21) PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS - MORE /LESS / EQUALLY SUCCESSFUL It's Newcastle, more of the same I reckon. Although I'd really love to see us promoted this year, then slowly build in the Premiership, a-la Everton. Build a solid team around two or three key players and eventually over the next 5 or 6 years try to break into Europe again. Aye, I'm a dreamer. 22) IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING FROM THE LAST DECADE Sir Bobby's sacking or Mike Ashley.
