Will Barton's return lead to better football?

Recommended Posts

if we finish top he needs to play in every single game we have left to qualify for a winners medal

How many games he would need for that?

Think we should also play players like Krul or Kadar and some other young players to get them a winners medal then.

not sure on the exact figure-read it on simon birds column this week but its 10 for the prem i know that. exceptions can also be obtained to get medals i believe

so am i wrong in thinking he only needs to play in 4 more games?...

The special dispensations are usually conceded for reserve goalies and players that have suffered serious injuries during the season. That's how Alan Smith got his for ManU, for example. So it's pretty feasible that Barton could get one. Krul too.

Barton is a player i always rated, was very pleased when we signed him but he has gone from good to a waste of time.

so much time on the sideline, question is, will he ever be as good as he was when he was at his best?

really don't think so, been away too much imo

I still have hope. He's a player that's never been particularly reliant on any athletic ability (unlike, say Owen), so he should be able to contribute even when not at his peak.

A statistic that I stumbled across is that Barton's longest continuous spell of first team starts (which stands at about 8) came at the end of the season before last, where we had that run of decent results to take us out of the relegation zone.

Coincidence?......... You decide.

wigan at home in particular and don't forget liverpool where he was not only poor but tried his very best to be sent off.

f***ing hell.

He got taken off very early in the game against Wigan with ligament damge. As for the Liverpool game, was he s**** poor. He was easily our best player until his red card.

Not really, do your research. He got taken off very early against Wigan. If you think that performance against Liverpool was poor/demonstrated a lack of desire, you're even more biased that I though.

it's you showing bias if you think he has been anything less than poor in his playing time here and not as bad as you've seen in your life here in his games this season.

Barton, aside from the Keegan era has shown nothing at all to write home about. Saying that, I'd still stick him in ahead of Nolan.

You said he demonstrated a lack of desire last season. That comment is just utter drive.

he did, and even more so this season when i struggle to remember more 'couldn't give a fuck' performances.

'Couldn't give a fuck' is an easy and lazy tag that folk give to players who are underpeforming, the truth of the matter is usually more complicated.

Btw, where did I say that Guthrie was fantastic? He may have had a few fantastic games this season but I never said he was a fantastic player. He's a good player with the potential to be very good.

he played as if he couldn't give a fuck and early on this season was as bad as i've seen in over 30yrs.

he's been here 3 years. he wasn't even so great in the season before we bought him despite being 'fantastic' the season before that. in his time when he has played he has been very good about 3 times under keegan. his other games under keegan were ok but a massive improvement on his previous form. outside of that time he's been very poor.

i hope if/when he comes in to the team he plays well however he can't prove me wrong in saying his playing time here so far has been very poor.

Not sure what your point is. All I said was he showed no lack of desire last season.

desire for what ?

to play well ? nope

to do good for his team ? nope

to leave an injury trail around anfiled ?  could beeeee!

He's shown little evidence since being here that he can improve the team, why should he start now ?

Didn't say "start".  Said I hope he'll play which means I hope he'll be on the bench and might get 10 or 15 minutes.

I think 'start' meant 'begin' in this context.
