Victor Moses joins Wigan Athletic

Nice way of avoiding the point there. Again, all I said that we needed a new striker as a matter of priority, goodnight.

That is a low quality risposte. Mind, you do seem a little more meek now.

Chris Hughton ‘hopeful’ that Victor Moses will move north

It is probably premature to commission a bust of Mike Ashley for the foyer of St James’ Park — too much, too consistently, has gone wrong at Newcastle United during his watch — but as the window draws to a close, supporters and players have been left pleasantly surprised by the club’s activity in the transfer market.

As long-time leaders of the Coca-Cola Championship, the concern within the Newcastle dressing room was that directors would view the side’s position of strength as an opportunity to do nothing or trim an already slender first-team squad.

While it may not be the stuff of street parties, those fears have not been realised.

Chris Hughton, the manager, will tackle the rest of the season with his squad bolstered by the arrivals of Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson and Wayne Routledge on permanent contracts and the loan signings of Fitz Hall, the Queens Park Rangers centre back, and Patrick van Aanholt, the defender who has joined from Chelsea, initially for a month.

Newcastle, along with Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion, also want to sign Victor Moses from Crystal Palace, with Hughton describing himself as “hopeful” that the forward would join Newcastle. The 19-year-old is understood to favour a move to Tyneside.

With loan deals for Zurab Khizanishvili and Marlon Harewood having ended and Newcastle confronting injuries of varying significance to Steven Taylor and José Enrique, some of Hughton’s work has been necessary housekeeping, but it still equates to a slight shift in philosophy at a club that have previously refused to look beyond this season.

“Certainly in our efforts with Moses at centre forward and with Wayne Routledge, it is a combination of now and the future,” Hughton said. “All along, we have known the most important thing is about this season and what we need to maintain where we are and get promotion, but there has also been an eye on the future.”

From the Times, published an hour ago. Some promising quotes there from Hughton - who plans to use him as a forward

Well, if Hughton's "hopeful" we may as well forget about it.

Jonas and Routledge on the wings.

Moses playing just off a target man.

Jesus, we'd actually be capable of thumping teams with that sort of setup.

Actual pace, been a long time since we've had it.

Exciting news just before bed that, the lass is gonna get it good. :snod:

Hughton in battle for Moses

Jan 30 2010 by Mark Douglas, The Journal

NEWCASTLE United are hopeful of making Crystal Palace forward Victor Moses their sixth capture of the January transfer window but face intense competition to sign the teenager.

On another busy day at St James’ Park, United clinched loan deals for QPR defender Fitz Hall and Chelsea youngster Patrick van Aanholt yesterday as well as lodging an improved bid for Palace striker Moses. That is understood to be around the £2million asking price with United now waiting to hear back from Crystal Palace’s administrators, who have also received bids from West Brom and Nottingham Forest.

United are confident they are a bigger draw than their Championship promotion rivals but the situation would be complicated by Premier League suitors West Ham, Stoke and Fulham firming up their interest with bids – while the distance from the player’s foster parents could also work against Newcastle.

Hughton was surprisingly upbeat when questioned about Moses yesterday, going much further than he has when previously talking about potential transfer targets, and The Journal understands that there is cautious optimism their bid and contract offer will be

enough to bring the 19-year-old to Tyneside, with the club prepared to more than double his Palace wages.

United were offered further encouragement by Moses’ agent Tony Finnegan last night, who said Moses had been “impressed” by the set up at St James’ Park.

“He went there on Wednesday and was impressed by the stadium and the fact there were 40,000 odd for a midweek game. Obviously that made an impression on Victor,” he told The Journal.

“We’re all just waiting for the administrators’ next move now.”

At his pre-match press conference yesterday, Hughton was fulsome in his praise of Moses, who has moved ahead of James Vaughan as the club’s priority striking target. “It’s been documented that we are very interested in signing the lad,” he said.

“Most people are also aware of the circumstances with Crystal Palace and the situation they are in, and we hope to make progress on that over the next couple of days.

“It’s one we have a very, very keen interest in.

“He is a player who has an ability to score goals. There is power and pace, but it is his potential.

“Around what we are trying to do here this season, which is the most important thing, there also has to be an eye on the future – and he is certainly a player of wonderful potential.” Capturing Moses would round off a successful transfer window for United, who travel to Leicester City for a televised clash this afternoon.

Hughton moved quickly to address injuries to key men Steven Taylor and Jose Enrique by signing Hall and van Aanholt yesterday.

Enrique will not play until mid-February, while Hughton confirmed Taylor will miss two months of action with a knee injury.

“Fitz is very good on the ground and has got good pace. He’s also a big, strong lad and I’m very pleased that we have him until the end of the season,” he said.

“I certainly liked what I saw that night (Patrick van Aanholt playing for Coventry against us). I’ve also heard a lot of good things about him and is a player who is very highly thought of at Chelsea.” The United boss also confirmed that Geremi is expected to depart St James’ Park before the end of the window, with the player in advanced discussions with Turkish club Ankaragucu.

But he ruled out any further outgoings before Monday’s transfer deadline.

“At this moment we are just waiting for final clarification. The indications are that Geremi will go and he has been talking (to Ankaragücü),” he said.

“No one else is leaving. That was something I was always very confident of and I think I had the feeling that here with this group of lads, there is no one who wants to go.”

This board would be a lot more fun if someone ever presented a decent arguement as to how i'm wrong instead. That's it Dave, score some more easy points, pathetic.

Is he a gutless scumbag?

He's right, it's rare anyone ever actually tries to debate with him, they get 2-3 posts in, then call him arrogant, obnoxious, or something similar. I'm not debating if he's arrogant or obnoxious, but at least he quotes facts.

I did provide sufficient infomation for him to have a debate. Unfortunately, he chose not to respond.

That's because you ended up agreeing with me.

Nope, I did ask you to engage your brain though.

Because I think we badly need a new striker?

Nope, because you said that it was "obvious" that that was the position that needed strengthening. Their are other areas that need it too, thus, it can be justifiably claimed that it is not "obvious".

To re-cap the points would be a waste of time and energy because I am not sure you have the slightest interest in debate or any opinion but your own. Feel free, however, to look back and consider them. Just try it with an open mind.

If you think that 9 league goals between our 3 fit strikers doesn't make it our biggest priority, I'm not sure what more I can say.

hmmm maybe you could say that is down to a combination of lack of creativity from the midfield, individual performances, and luck (either type)?
