Madness!!! (Togo banned from next two Africa Cups of Nations)

Recommended Posts

Stelling has just said Togo banned from the next 2 ACN.

I read that they were supposed - maybe by FIFA rules? - to fly into the area where they were playing their first match, but took coach transport instead.. maybe that has a bearing in the decision.

CAF suspends Togo for next two Afcon tournaments

Togo, who pulled out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a terrorist attack on their team bus, have been banned for the next two editions of the tournament, says the African Football Confederation (CAF).

CAF president Issa Hayatou told AFP the decision was based on "governmental interference", which led to the team's decision to pull out of this year's edition.

Togo decided to pull out of the tournament after two members of their delegation were shot and killed during an attack on the team bus as it passed through the restive Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

The armed wing of the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), embroiled in a decades-long separatist struggle, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The "governmental interference" thing isn't out of nowhere, though. Isn't it the case that any national FA can be lumped out of FIFA if their government has been interfering in the game according to whatever criteria? Notion of keeping the sport free of interference from heavy-handed regimes etc etc? If the Togolese team/FA wanted to continue with the tournament but the government of Togo prevented that, that would explain it.

To be fair though the circumstances regarding the togolese government's demands were extreme to say the least. Extremely harsh by CAF/FIFA.

Yeah, maybe. I guess it's the principle of the thing – you react to stop other governments doing anything similar. What the Togolese FA wanted should not have been forbidden by the state for its own reasons.

What doesn't help were the reports coming out saying that the Togolese team didn't want to play, then they did, then they didn't, then they did again.

Now if they could just ban the whole ACN for like...forever.

Is the right answer, silly nothing tournament. At least do it in the summer like normal continental tournies.

They do have it in the summer. The African Summer.

They should have it when it's convenient for the rest of the world not just when it suits them.

Why? It's an African tournament held in Africa. It's hardly their fault is it that their players have improved? No-one gave a toss when they had no african players.

No excuse to disrupt the rest of world football. It's incredibly selfish of the ACN to just demand to take teams players when they feel like it.

Bit redundant argument as it's always "summer" in Africa.
