Realistic Transfer Targets Summer 2010

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few people say Robbie Keane would be a bad signing.

I assume that's purely because of the potential price/wages?

No not just his wages.  Many people fear he is on the decline and wouldn't be good enough for the fee and wages needed to get him.

Disagree. He's held a relatively solid goalscoring record throughout his career, he isn't absolutely prolific but he's always struck me as a smart player who can absolutely still cut it at the top level, and particularly if he's a regular starter. Him and Carroll would have potential IMO (albeit you lot would have better idea) with the way Keane can drop off and link the midfield.

KD would have a good insight, I know he wasn't happy with him in his 2nd stint?

Reo-Coker fits the bill really. Jason Roberts on the otherhand would be amongst the most pointless signings i've seen us make, regardless of the price.

Out of interest, why would Roberts be a pointless signing?

Everytime I see Roberts he seems to play reasonably well. Not a world beater by any means but no worse than Kalinic who they spent £6m on (though he's got time on his side) and far better than Di Santo (who is wank)

I'd try and get the best out of Barton next season with him as our main man the middle, and alongside Reo-coker I think it could be a decent partnership. They can switch roles going forward and protecting the back four, but with Reo-coker especially decent at breaking things up and tracking runs, allowing Barton to get foward, get his passing back to his best, and getting into the box.

Reo-Coker's athleticism is exactly what we need, it doesn't matter if he's not great on the ball.

A central midfielder who can run might be too much to take, it would freak the shit out of me.

Would prefer him over Best anyday.

Well thank fuck there is more than those 2 options.

Because he's old, an average footballer, and doesn't score many goals. We need a striker that will make a significant impact.

Boca face a decision whether they are going renew Palmermo or Riquelme's contracts as both are up for renewing but they f***ing hate each other so they might not renew both. To make matters worth they are both Boca legends, Palermo being their joint record goal scorer and Riquelme being class.

I am not a friend of (Riquelmes), I have no relationship (with him). The only thing that unites us is (to) defend the colors of Boca.

Not that he'd move or be suitable for us anyway like.

They covered this during the Boca- San Lorenzo game.  The two are not friends and don't socialise outside of the game, but are great players together on the field.  Palermo recently became Boca's top scorer and the Argentine media made a huge deal of the fact that they celebrated separately (I didn;t see the goal but assume Riquelme provided the cross to Palermo). However,in this game when Riquelme played Palermo in for his goal they were the first to celebrate together.

Riquelme want's to stay, I think Palermo wants to stay but cost may be an issue keeping both.

Incidentaly - Palermo doesn;t socialise with several other Boca players outside of the games either, but people only focus on him/Riquelme.

Yobo, Reo-Coker, Roberts, Keane. Genuinely think these are the right sort of players to be targetting providing they're for respectable fees. Priority next year is to survive and seasoned, average-to-good pros like these sort of players fit the bill entirely.

Plus Joe Ledley and O'Hara or Boateng and confidence in staying moves up a few notches.

PL standard striker IMO. If you could get him on the cheap I think he'd be a canny buy and someone who knows what it takes in this league to bring off the bench isn't a bad thing.

If not, go all out for Keane.

That would be a very good window for you, albeit I don't rate NRC whatsoever. I agree you should be targeting those sorts of players but getting all would cost you a fair whack.

Agree, and maybe all of them wouldn't be the best thing to do - cos they're all of a similar ilk. We need a mix really, not all-out youngsters/foreign gambles, tis more my point. Two or three fully proven and decent Premier League-standard players are essential for the squad next year.

Reo-Coker, Taarabt & Keane would cost around 12-15m, then add a few players who'd be cheaper like Mendy from Hull and a window like that shouldnt be out of our reach.

Think I would rather go for O'Hara or Boateng for next season, don't think we can take gambles on players like Taarabt unless it was a loan or something, or we had a shit load to spend (doubtful).

i think it would be a mistake for mainly go for older pros. we could do with one, maybe two, of the more experienced types to give some leadership in the squad (we already have a few as it is), but i wouldn't want three quarters of our signings to be old players on huge wages on the way down. would store up problems for the future imo. i'd hope we'd be looking for players who could improve as we do and stick with us for a decent amount of time.
