It's a good signing for them, the real problem is though that they are buying s*** in midfield who won't create many chances for him. it reminds me of us a few years ago where we had a decent forward line but no one to provide them with anything.

What's his main strength? Heading? Larsson & Wickham could potentially be Barton & Carroll Lite.

Alternatively it could also be Whitehead & Stead.

He's better on the ground than people give him credit for, quite an all round player. Would do better for Liverpool than carroll, shocked they didn't gor for him.

Carroll's scored goals in the premier. I haven't seen tWickham play but is there a reason he's not scored more? Can he finish?

Will this affect Sunderland's pursuit of N'gog?

Scott Wilson -

Yeah - won't happen now.

:undecided:

So are they after a better striker, or are they happy with the current lot?

That's just turned it from a decent deal to a brilliant one.

Gyan, Wickham, Campbell...surely they need one more? Probably a pikey loan deal for someone.

Campbell's a doubt for this season too isn't he?

Just trying to be realistic but as much as some say they need a 'quick fix' and a 'goalscorer', we aren't exactly overloaded with goal machines. Especially with Best apparently available for sale.

I imagine the striker we sign will have some sort of proven goalscoring pedigree though.

Erdnic isn't all that prolific is he? and he seems to be our main target.

Just think we are in very similar positions, also don't think we should sell Best unless he is pushing to leave.

Not seen him play. Seems an exciting talent though, by all accounts. Considering his wages will be low I think it's a reasonable price really - they won't mind paying the extra brass if he does the business. We paid £5m for Jenas when he was 18, in 2002.

Good signing tbh. At least if the hype is true.

Suprised we weren't in it for £9m as that price could rise if he succeeds, though, obviously, it's a special risk buying such a young and unproven player.

In the 4 seasons he's been a regular Ligue 1 striker he's got 45 in 130. 1 goal in 3 striker.

We were one of the top clubs in the league at the time, he had the likes of Speed who he could learn from, and there wasn't any real danger that a much bigger club would come in for him. We were also able to ease him in a bit with having the likes of Dyer as well in that position.

Wickham is going to a club where they have one main striker, he'll be expected to hit the ground running, and if he does well, he'll be off.

And they'll make more than £8m. Win/win in terms of the fee they've paid.

Had a look at the YT clip. Whickham looks like he's got ability, definitely good with the ball at his feet. but there's nothing in it to show that he's a finisher. In fact he missed a couple he should have scored in the highlights video. He might well turn out to be a very good player for Sunderland but it's a hell of an expensive risk on someone who hasn't scored regularly.
