To the coachy types. What's the 9v9 youth hype I'm seeing from journos on twitter today, is it just flavour of the month? I thought 7v7 was going the the future of youth football a few years ago.

Instead of going from Mini-Soccer (7v7) to 3/4 11-a-side at u11, they're going to play 3/4 9v9 instead. They belief is that it won't be so much of a culture shock to young players still developing. I agree with it personally.

Right, is there anywhere I can have a little read about the merits of the different options for youth development rather than just getting Henry Winter's take on it?

Think the best example is to look at Spain, Germany, Netherlands, France and then look at England.

Is that Ben Dawson who went to Longbenton?

Aye. Small small world!

Thought it might've been. My sister knows him and I remember her saying he was involved with coaching etc.

Sir Trevor Brooking loves a good waffle about youth development:

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/NewsAndFeatures/2011/YPD

He never shuts up about it yet he has had no impact whatsoever since being in that role.

He came close with Lilleshall... and then bottled it. Now we've got St. George's Park... hope that isn't thrown to the wayside after 5 years too.

It's a great course to do. but it is a big jump.

You have to 'log' in 12 hours of coaching and the sessions have to be level 2 sessions.

This is basically broken down into a Technical, Skill then a game session.

That's the very basics of it.

It's around  50% pass rate

I started mine in July 2010 and passed May 2011. It can probably done in 9 months though.

Just our group didn't do it together, it was done with our won teams which meant it was a longer process to assess.

Definitely give it a go if you think you can do it

Do you coach at all with a team? It will help massively if you do, otherwise you can't really put into practice what you've learned.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Derek Fazackerley has been forced to pull out of Sunday’s Coach the Coach Convention session. Whilst this is a major blow, we are thrilled to announce that Willie Donachie, current Newcastle United FC Reserve Team Coach, has stepped in to take Derek’s place.

We are very grateful to Willie for helping us out at such short notice and having observed him on the coaching field, I am sure that those attending will benefit from his vast experience and excellence.

Willie has agreed to work around Derek’s initial theme of work and will show practices regularly used on the NUFC Training Ground with the first and second string.

Wow this hasn't been updated in 6 months!

Northumberland FA (and McDonalds) have a few 'free' courses on the go at the moment. You need to be CRB'd and part of a Charter Standard club to benefit, but that's pretty easy if you're serious/committed to the idea of coaching (talk to your local grassroots team).

McDonalds Sponsored Coaching Courses - Apply Now

Northumberland FA are delighted to announce that McDonalds will be sponsoring a Level 2 coaching award in 2013, along with this the company has also agreed to sponsor the running of a Module 1 and a Module 2 in the coming months.
