I'd love to see someone like Jack Charlton at the club but not as a DOF, more a chief executive like Bobby Charlton is at Man Utd.

The role doesn't have to be technical though. It would just be nice to have a knowledgable local fella in a high position who has the clubs best interests at heart, as an advisor to the board and perhaps even a representative in transfers and within the media.

SBR would have been amazing in this role, RIP.

Jackie Charlton is as mad as a pan of crabs.

I know hes just got off a flight from Alicante if you wanna catch him at the airport.

edit- I was in the centrepaddock the day he jumped into the crowd to confront a fan.

Not to mention how well his spell as manager demonstrated how much he understood the club and the fans.

I don't want a DoF. Some people about the club who know anything about fucking football would help though, rather than casino managers.

That's why I specifically said General Manager (with a football background) anticipating the thread going sideways.  :aww:

There has to be a balance between spending beyond our means and spending virtually nothing. I thought the penny had dropped in January where he released a modest amount of money to buy Routledge which gave us an extra gear which meant we pissed the league. Why he can't apply the same common sense to this transfer window I've got no idea. Releasing another modest amount of money to get the likes of Ben Arfa in would have made complete sense but he's trying to do it on the cheap.

We're going to yo-yo for the next few years imo.

So what is the point in spending money in January to help us get promotion then getting relegated the following season for not consolidating  :dave:

You're asking the wrong bloke mate. I can't make sense of what Ashley's doing either.

Bobby Charlton isn't a chief executive. I've no idea what his actual job title is, but he's basically in an ambassadorial kind of role. This makes sense because he's got a lot of charm, and because he was such an iconic player for the club he represents.

Jackie, by contrast, is no fucking diplomat. And his history with this club is negligible.

don't forget we have an academy that is brimming with young talent, we just need to promote from within.

we have no coaches that can coach them though

years and years of players ability getting worse by the time they leave the club and the amount of youngsters that have made it at the club (2 in 10 years is quite frankly a disgrace)

Isn't it better to spend £5-£7 million on 1 quality midfielder than to buy no-one and risk being relegated again?

True, but as long as the fcb is owner this club will be a selling club.

I believe if someone came in with a few million for Taylor or Carroll they would be away.

We are in the same position we were a few years ago when Waddle Beardsley and Gasgoine were sold.

True, and for even less reason - at least Beardsley was sold to pay for the Milburn Stand. The truth is though, that the club weren't ambitious under McKeag/Seymour/Westwood etc., at least, not enough to build a proper club. Ashley is also not ambitious for the club to be in the top 5, he just wants it as a plaything until he can get his money back - and that will be a LONG time in my opinion.

Really think we need one more in Jan if we are going to make a proper go at surviving.

What position and how much? Have to admit I was happy and impressed with Summer transfer window, felt like some real shrewd business - can't knock the board for it all. Certainly not compared to past board efforts of showing our hand all the time, and then having to bluff our ways out only to go all in and lose.

We needed a striker before our best player broke his leg.

I think we'll sign a striker as it happens, but I expect a Leon Best-style low-risk gamble rather than Robbie Keane.
