Wow, that says a lot!

It says that we relied far too much on a very limited player.

Or that he is a very underrated player.

He isn't underrated in though, everyone knows he's very good at what he does, and very limited in most other areas.  Everyone should also realise that if your team cant win games without Kevin Nolan, then you need a new team, not to simply focus on keeping him at all costs.

Eh?

what's the purported fee?

At a guess based on the previous bid, around £3m.

ooof, everyone (on here) went apeshit at that amount last i heard

were't we just linked with another CM?  oh yeah craig gardner...maybe a 1/1 with small outlay?

This is exactly like sacking Hughton imo.

We know he's not the best but he's done well and you'd rather not roll the dice on a replacement while simultaneously pulverizing existing team spirit.

you don't know this is going to happen, especially if we bring in 5-6 new players

If we're cost-cutting can we not just get rid of Smith and Guthrie?

Guthrie pays us to play, man.

We are getting rid of Smith. ...hopefully there is a team out there stupid enough to sign him.

Joey7Barton Joseph Barton

Great player, leader, captain, person, trainer and mostly a friend for life. Devastated to see him SOLD! #mejoseandjonasnext

What an unbelievable tit.

He wants to leave for free, Jose wants to leave as well, more to do with them than the club.

Should boot Barton out just for tweeting that TBH. The club make mistakes, but he's still employed by them and needs to act with a bit of class and respect.

Nobody is bigger than NUFC.

Pathetic.

What's so hard to understand?  Are you seriously telling me your happy with your side relying so heavily on a player like Nolan that they cant win without him?

As much as I love personal abuse, would be nice to get your actual opinion on the issue.

The solution isn't to sell him though it's to add to the squad and gradually reduce that dependency.

Are people seriously talking about the sale of Andy Cole in a Kevin Nolan thread?!

There's a reason he's off to the Championship instead of a decent club and that's because for the most part he's a complete waste of space and a passenger the other 9 outfield players have to carry.

Good luck to him but he's just not good enough.

What does that say about the rest of our squad, considering he was our top scorer and we didn't win a match without him?

He was our top scorer because he had an exceptional goal scoring season that I don't think he's capable of repeating, that combined with the sale of Carroll, Best being injured for the most part and Ameobi and Lovenkrands being shite.

Lets be realistic here, if managers thought Nolan was capable of getting similar figures every season then there would be plenty of club outside the top 6 fighting for his signature, the fact he's going to a Championship club shows how highly the rest of the Premiership rates him and his contribution on the pitch.

The stat about us not winning a game when he wasn't here is just a random stat, like Lovenkrands being the 3rd most accurate forward etc.

Which means giving a player your looking to remove from the team a new 4 year £50k+ contract, is that a good move?  Yes Nolan has 2 years left on his contract, but he's obviously not happy to let that contract run down.  He wants security because next season he'll be 30 and no doubt he realises that very soon nobody will give him the kind of contract he's after now.

Been thinking about how this relates to Pardew's power - as I'd previously thought he couldn't be the spineless puppet some say he is. But after today's news, I'm wondering why Ashley doesn't go all Ron Noades and appiint himself manager...

Influential character in the dressing room by all means but seemingly lazy on the football pitch. If we can address the issue of not having a goalscoring centre forward then we won't rely on Nolan's goals to get us the odd few points and replace him with a more mobile, agile midfielder.

Sorry to see him go as a captain and a character for the team but not so much as a player on the pitch.
