random factoid from .com

The Magpies will attempt to win successive home games for the first time this season, while also looking to end a run of three consecutive losses at SJP in their season -closing top-flight fixture (Fulham 0-1 in 2008/09, Chelsea 0-2 in 2007/08 and Blackburn Rovers 0-2 in 2006/07).

We've won six games at home in the league this season and were in the lead at half time on each occasion. If Newcastle are to win though, they'll have to achieve something they're yet to manage in eleven top flight attempts, namely winning without Kevin Nolan.

Since the midfielder arrived at SJP from Bolton in January 2009, he's missed eleven PL games due to either injury or suspension. We've drawn six and lost the other five.

(It should be said that United won both Championship matches that Nolan sat out - away at Coventry & QPR).

Kevin Nolan: I'll sign deal to keep Joey Barton and get Toon into Europe

Published 22:50 21/05/11 By Brian McNally

Inspirational skipper Kevin Nolan believes he can steer the Newcastle revival bandwagon into Europe next season with the aid of his Scouse sidekick Joey Barton.

Victory over West Bromwich Albion at St James’ Park today could well propel the Magpies to a top 10 Premier League finish and Nolan insists the Europa League must be their minimum target next term.

Nolan and Barton are both locked in contract talks with the club’s top brass – and the indications are positive the close friends are moving closer to signing new deals.

Barton, who stalled on penning a new deal in January after the £35million sale of Andy Carroll, insists he will now sign if Nolan accepts an improved offer.

Nolan said: “I’d like us to keep Joey. He’s a big player for us and he’s come out on record saying he wants to stay. He said he will sign if I do.

“We all want Joey to stay. We want to keep this squad together. That is key – along with adding to it. We can’t afford to lose any other big players, to be honest.”

And Nolan – Newcastle’s top scorer with 12 goals this season – is adamant he wants to finish his career on Tyneside after helping lift the Toon from the despair of relegation in 2009 to a runaway Championship title a year later and a solid Premier League finish this term. Nolan added: “The Europa League is the minimum that this club should be aiming for. We should be in the elite.

“Playing my part in the Newcastle revival has made me proud. Two years ago I finished the season down in the dumps when we went down and I didn’t know where my future was going to be.

“But I just didn’t want to go – I wanted to prove myself here as a player.

“Over the last two years, I feel like I’ve been able to do that but I don’t want it to stop here. I want it to go on over the next four or five years.”

Despite controversial decisions by owner Mike Ashley that saw manager Chris Hughton sacked and star striker Carroll sold, Nolan believes Newcastle are finally getting it right.

He explained: “Mike took a lot of stick over the last two years but he’s been fantastic.

“He’s got a manager, Alan Pardew, he firmly believes in, who he wants to back. Hopefully now that will be the case in the summer and it’s going to be the springboard to bring in the right players to push us forward.”

Am I naive to think Ashley may just spend some dosh because pardew is his preferred manager and willing to let him have a go at it properly [/naiveproashleycomment]

Or maybe Pardew is his yes man who is willing to live with next to no transfer funds and being told what to do. http://forums.atomixro.com/images/smilies/troll.png

Even with a 3-0 lead, we still can't win a Premiership game without him

Completely forgot about that statistic. Like the rest of the "missing", hardly felt his absence today until things started to fall apart in the second half. I'm still firmly with you on the Nolan bandwagon like, unlike many of these heathens.

Not that Guthrie or Barton had particularly bad games in the middle of the park, i think it's pretty clear that we missed his influence today. I certainly don't think the side will have been as half-arsed as it was, had both he and Barton been barking orders from the middle of the pitch.

Nolan's a captain and a leader. When it hits the fan you need someone to step up and calm things down and that's what he does very well.

While we're on the subject of pointless factoids:

Newcastle and West Brom have finished in adjacent positions for three consecutive seasons.

08/09 - 18th/19th

09/10 - 1st/2nd

10/11 - 12th/11th

nolan's little bairn yesterday was hilarious. barton had obviously been given the job of looking after it as kev was on crutches, the way it just kept legging it away from him was class, most entertaining part of the afternoon.

I've grown to love him like, I have to say. He's properly limited as a player, but he's a fucking class captain like.
