Realistic Transfer Targets January 2011

Aye, then there's these quotes from Pardew saying he'd like a couple to bolster what we have. Who bloody knows?

He mentions the possibility of bringing in 1 or 2 players. They could even just be squad players he says: -

I'm not too worried. In the Summer NUFC said it wouldn't be spending any money but we got Ben Arfa on loan (with a £5m buy clause), Tiote for £3.5m, Perch was £1m and Gosling and Campbell for free.

We would never have "discovered" the likes of Carroll if it wasn't for NUFC's recent belt tightening ways. We'd have wanted to buy new strikers to replace Owen, Martins and Viduka. It gives the likes of Ranger a chance.

You don't go out of your way to bring a new man in on a 5 year deal midway through the season and then give him nothing to spend.

Although, this is Mike Ashley's regime. Whatever Pardew says in the press is irrelevant to what goes on behind the scenes, we've found that with everyone who has worked under Ashley because they often don't know themselves what's going on.

I think we can all agree on what needs to happen both long and short term. Long term we need to the failures out of the club and replace them: Smith, Xisco, Best. You can add to that list the likes of: Lovenkrands, Ryan Taylor, Perch, maybe Guthrie too. In the short term, we'll be lucky to shift any and should look towards strengthening our first team options with bigger changes happening in summer. We badly lack quality up front if Carroll gets injured, and we only have two fit wingers, so it's obvious those are the urgent priorities. I'll be disappointed if neither position is strengthened over the coming weeks because we are one or two injuries away from a severely weakened team as we saw at West Brom. The club will argue Gosling and Ben Arfa will return but it's still not enough because our other backup as mentioned earlier is mostly dead wood which we will eventually look to sell.

'A lot of press about players going and players coming in but the truth is I don't really want [anything] to happen. Maybe one or two players coming in to just boost us a little bit, maybe on a squad level rather than a first team level just to make sure we've got enough cover in certain positions where I think we're weak.'

We have enough s*** squad players. Some of them are currently starting.

Aye, let's just get rid of the lot and just have an 11 player squad.

Missing the point to a staggering level.

We need to bolster the first team. Just like we needed to this time 12 months ago.

What?

"May aswell sign nobody if we're not going to improve the first XI."

Suggests that the first team is all that matters. If our backups are s***, surely we should look to replace them as well?

Pardew's comments suggest that we are going to sign backups to the likes of Shola and Gutierrez, rather than actively trying to improve on them. We have a reasonably deep squad, the problem is that this squad depth is mainly comprised of players who are not completely up to it at this level, adding more of these types of players (which is what those quotes appear to suggest) just seems pointless to me. I'd rather we bought one good striker than 3 Championship players to further pad our squad with rubbish.

Rather than replacing squad players we should be relegating some of the current starters to backup players. That's how it normally works when teams want to improve.

Backups are nothing if they're not good enough to win games. Pointless us improving the backup if the first choice isn't good enough.

Do you want us to end up like Portsmouth?

Eh? I'm just saying if we're gonna bring in new players to 'improve the cover', i really couldn't give a shit. First team is where we actually need upgrades. If they're specifically brought in to improve the first eleven, then great.

An example being having Simpson, R.Taylor and Perch for the right-back position and not one of them being good enough. Fair play to Simpson like, he's really impressed me this season but the point remains. For the combined cost and wages of collecting a number of cheap average players we could have a decent one. Same applies up front where we have Lovenkrands, Xisco, Best and Shola picking up wages and they're all pants.

FWIW given Pardew's comments I'd imagine we would be looking for cheap backups to Jose and Jonas. If we're not going to be flogging players I can't see which other areas we're particularly light in.

You've always had a secret love-in for Simpson tbh Dave. Even when he was slated you were proclaiming little Danny had become 'underrated' :aww:

I agree, though.

I was?

Oh well, just call me Ronaldo.

Is it not a bit small-time btw that Pardew feels he has to come out and say his main focus in this transfer window is keeping our good players, as though that's something to be particularly proud of in itself? We're probably not going to sell our best players who are doing the business right now. Fucking great that like, amazing stuff. Thanks.

Shouldn't even be in question. :nope:
