junkhead
Must be something in this, SSN just showed a clip Pardew being asked about it and he wasn't an unbelievably mouthy c***. Even more than usual? edit: my mitake Anyway, Bothroyd has the ability. I'd be pleased with him.
ponsaelius
He really isn't better though. Until this season he was rubbish even at Championship level. How can we expect him to make the step up seemlessly at 28 because of one little purple patch in the second tier? He's the same as the rest of our ragtag bunch of forwards in that he is barely worth allocating wages to. We should be shifting about 4 of them out not adding another ffs. Guest Heneage
If this means one striker's being moved on and we're looking to add a pacey player in the summer I'll be happy.
arnonel
Better than anyone we have other than Carrol Capello scouts must also have seen something in him not a gamble if cheap and a good edition if Carrol is out
ponsaelius
1 in 4 in a career spent almost entirely in the second division. (1 half season in the Prem and a flounce in Serie A with Perugia the exceptions) What I will say is in linking to the post in the Williamson thread that some players simply do not reach their potential as a player till much later in their careers. There may be the chance that he can now make the step up, but it's a risk and one that to be honest isn't really worth taking on a 28 year old. JH
Wouldn't be overly joyed about this signing, but I wouldn't be at the point of getting ready to cut myself either. Which is the impression alot in here are giving

If he can embrace playing for a top club he could be a very astute signing

He isn't the mega signing or the young lad with years of potential, but he could do a surprisingly good job for us if he manages to make the step up. Just hope his head is in it and his attitude is spot on, because we can't afford to be rocking the boat.

AyeDubbleYoo
Aye I know, that's my worry. Still, so did Joey Barton's until recently... it's not impossible that someone can change.
Foluwashola
Well this would be underwhelming Isn't he an incredibly similar player to the forwards we already have? 28 and unproven at the top level, surely there must be better out there? His England call-up was one of the nation's most embarrassing moments.

Guest michaelfoster
His record is not that much better than Leon Best's and certainly not as impressive as Shola's track record. we already have 3 strikers of Bothroyd's calibre in Best, Loven and Shola, with a raw player of potential in Ranger. that is 4 mediocre back-up strikers - we don't need any more. squad depth isn't the issue up-front, quality is, and it is difficult to argue that Bothroyd represents a significant jump in quality over these guys cos his record says otherwise. The same Shola who's career track record is Played 297 Scored 67 which is a goal every 4.4 games Boothroyd's career record is Played 329 Scored 83 which is a goal every 3.9 game
BONTEMPI
Well this type of signing just shows how little Pardew knows about football at the highest level. Jay Bothroyd = a poor mans Carlton Cole We're ganning doon! Panic!
Guest BlacknWhiteArmy
I just think this would be a sideways step. I don't think he's got much on what we've already got (Shola, Best, Loven etc) in below par strikers.

STM
Suprised at the amount of negativity towards this. Jay Bothroyd causes defenders alot of problems, infact he is quite similar to Carroll in the way he plays, although not as good obviously. If he came in, he would be our second best striker. The thought of Carroll and Bothroyd would frighten the life our of most defences (despite a lack of pace). The only negative issue with him is his age but if he's out of contract in the summer, one would suggest we will get him on the cheap. If we get Bothroyd for a couple of million it would be a smart piece of business IMO.
