cp40
The back of the old Leazes End. Did they need to knock it down in 78 when they obviously couldn't afford to replace it? the story I was told was the stand to match the east stand was ready to go up. but the cost of demolishing the old leazes end went over-to about half a £million- and they were left unable to pay for the leazes stands construction. Look at the kids getting in for nothing by climbing the wall, one of our future players (at the time) used to get in that way. Am I imagining this or as a kid did I see people actually with ladders trying to get into the back of the leazes?
Mick
Am I imagining this or as a kid did I see people actually with ladders trying to get into the back of the leazes? I didn't see ladders, I know a rope was tied to something inside and the first person climbed over and threw the rope over the wall for the others to use. When you got over you came out in the toilets which were at the bottom of the stairs into the corner of the Leazes where it joined the East Stand. For those who don't know, that's the view in the photograph.

madras
Anyone on here actually do that? Brilliant, mind. I did it at the Gallowgate when I was a kid but never to the height some of those are at. During some of the bigger games you could see people up trees in Leazes Park from the Gallowgate, that was after they'd knocked down the old Leazes and had a lower back wall. there are photos from the fairs cup run of people watching from trees and I think from the roof of the houses on leazes terrace. manorpark
Some of my favourite NUFC photos from the 1960s . . . Benwell Lad
Love the photo of the pylon and those brilliant ones from manorpark too. A first team squad of 14 players Eric Ross - nee glasses on, Wyn the leap - hard as granite. Never noticed the resemblance between Joe and Roberto Martinez before seeing that picture Over the years I've watched from every part of St.James' at some time but nothing will ever compare with being in the old Leazes, the incredible noise and boisterous sea of fans was just amazing to be part of. Agreed about the Leazes, the atmosphere was usually brilliant and that was helped by standing and not having loud music banging out before the game started. manorpark
You mention "Wyn the Leap", Benwell Lad. Here is a photo of Wyn doing exactly that (towering above everyone else) from that same away match at Selhurst Park, that we won 3-0, on October 4th 1969. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/Newcastle%204/WynDavies-NUFC_zpsc2e45974.jpg

Some great memories of being in the Leazes for me....being carried several rows forward when a goal was scored etc but the best was during a game v Man C in the season after we won the Fairs Cup ; a dog got into the ground and ran on to the pitch during the game...immediately, the Leazes all began to sing 'Will ye get Joe Baker(Mackem CF)off the field' to the tune of 'She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes...' Brilliant...! In later years(early 76 I think), they all sang 'Happy Birthday' to Supermac before we trounced Coventry 4-0 in an FA Cup replay - Macdonald hadn't scored for a few weeks prior to that, but he duly obliged with a fine goal on the night..! Mr. Snrub
http://oi62.tinypic.com/s2y0j4.jpg Just thinking about the 1 or 2 positives of last shambles. Last match I properly celebrated with pride. 41 years in the making. Top performance, out singing them all match as usual at OT. 'Don't sell Cabaye' for 15 minutes after the match. Our best moment of the season, and the mackems still outdone us on it by winning twice there
