England lags behind in technical ability and player development from all of the big guns. France and Germany have infinitely better financial models too.

The Premiership is the best 'product' though, right?

Best brand yes.  Doesn't mean it's the best in terms of quality though.

There is a lot wrong with our game, same in Italy and Spain. I just think when all is totalled up we have the most problems and the financial muscle helps to mask that.

la liga's completely unbalanced financially and i'm frankly relieved the premiership hasn't gone down that route. not yet at least. there's lots of flaws to the premiership but la liga could learn a thing or two from it about money distribution. similarly the premiership could learn from the german model but it's too far gone now for that to happen.

Mourinho has shown that Barca can be beaten if you funnel back in defence, deny them space in the final third and kick anything that moves. That's not the Man U way, and they paid for it tonight. Barca won't be beaten at their own game.

Mind you, at least it allowed the rest of us to watch a great side in full flow.

Again, I believe tonight's game has showed how inferior the premiership is nowadays.   Our teams just aren't good enough when our friends on the continent are technically better.  Look at the uefa cup, only 1 English team has won it in last 15-20 years I believe (Liverpool in 2001).

You'd have a point if our friends on the continent could compete with them, but only one of them does, the rest are as far behind as the SPL is behind the Old Firm.

What do these games show - Valencia 0-1 Manchester United, Manchester United 1-1 Valencia.

My point is that outside the top 4, English clubs have done f***ing woeful in the uefa cup.  That to me shows up big problems in terms if quality of the league.

The gap between Barca & Real Madrid is unbelievingly wide now, you just cant rate La Liga as great league. TWO AWESOME FUCKING TEAM THOUGH!!!! Man Utd are very dominating as PL history shows but at least 3 or 4 teams still have a chance at the start of April.

You can cherry pick whichever statistics you want.  Another one is that there has been at least 1 English teams in 5 of the last 6 European Cup finals.

And most English teams treat the Europa League like a total inconvenience these days so what you're saying proves very little.

No it doesn't.  Prove it hat English teams treat it as nothing.  As this season both Liverpool and city got knocked out playing their full teams.

Those champs league statistics shows dominance of top 4 especially man utd in that time.

Fact is though, the premiership is not the full hurrah many think it is.  It is one of the best but it isn't certainly the standout league many think it is.

Martin O'Neill

I will make it clear to the Aston Villa fans what we will do if we are in the Europa League. Had we qualified and got to the group stage this season, I would not have thrown games away, but I would’ve blooded the youngsters. The likes of Ciaran Clark, Marc Albrighton and Nathan Delfouneso would’ve been given a chance so that, come this stage of the season, you’d know precisely what they’re capable of.

That experience might come in really handy in the run-up in the Premier League. That’s the theory. In practice there might be a Europa League game so important that you might have to go with your senior players. This is my thought process and, if we’re in the Europa League next season, that is what we will do. If we’re in the Champions League then try telling Richard Dunne, who has fought so hard to get this far, that he’s not playing.

Again you're choosing to ignore certain things, such as how ridiculously dominant Barcelona and Real Madrid now are in the Spanish league.

The top 6 in England is pretty fucking good if you ask me.  Barcelona are just streets ahead of anyone at the minute though.

Only 2 teams have won the last 7 premiership titles as well.  You counting that arsenal were in the title race as I wouldn't tbh.

Redknapp said. "We'll look at it and maybe it gives us a chance to play some of the younger players in that. The Premier League is going to be all important to us next year."

If there was more money in the Europa League then more English teams might prioritise it higher.  Whether Liverpool or Man City fielded strong teams or not, there's a mentality there that it's a bit of a pointless competition and I think that's quite well known.

Seriously, the midfield wasn't existent today.

Makes sense though. Carrick, Anderson, Park, Valencia, Nani, OAP versions of Giggs and Scholes, Fletcher, etc, that is actually a pretty mediocre selection if we're talking about the highest levels, especially with Giggs and Scholes on their last legs. Barely top 4 Premiership material imo, and has been carried in the league by the defence/strikers (hence why this title winning ManU side are generally considered to be a very weak one, usually they've been outplayed but somehow scraped a win). Up against one of the best midfields of the modern era, they never stood a chance.

The Europa league is prioritised by lesser sides from the top leagues, or the top sides from the lesser leagues. that's why the likes of fulham and boro reach the final, or why this year's was contested by two teams from portugal. doesn't mean liga sagres is dominant, just a reflection of how teams approach the competition.

Yes but again you are just looking at the stats regarding the champs league.  The uefa cup for me is a measure of how the league is past the top 4.  Real and barca are dominant, but so have Chelsea and Man Utd for which has passed some people by.

It goes to show as well, whenever you ask the top players from abroad about what Englishman from the last decade they'd have had in their team above all, they all say Scholes. A midfielder whose technical ability in his prime meant he could actually live with the likes of Xavi.

None of them ever mention the likes of Gerrard.

a number of changes for the Europa League play-off first leg with Rapid Vienna

MacDonald has opted to leave behind Stiliyan Petrov, Luke Young and Ashley Young, while there is no James Milner following his move to Manchester City.

Stephen Ireland is ineligible following his move from City.

It means a number of youngsters have been drafted in, including defenders James Collins and Eric Lichaj, midfielders Shane Lowry and Barry Bannan and Austrian striker Andreas Weimann.

Ferguson will not get a wink of sleep tonight for cursing the decision to play Valencia who simply had an appalling evening.

Valencia would have still been in the title race at that stage in England because the points total of the top teams was far considerably lower than in Spain, and this years league was won with lowest points total in a few seasons.

remember discussing that very issue on here after the 2009 final. was convinced fergie would go out and replace the likes of Carrick. Not addressing that issue for 2 years, with Anderson failing to improve and Giggs and Scholes finished, means the problem has only gotten bigger and bigger. could convincingly say they need 3 new midfielders now - defensive upgrade on Fletcher and Carrick, Scholes replacement and a ball playing midfielder a la modric.
