Yohan Cabaye retires

Selling him for less than Fellaini? No way.

The transfer market has too much variance to have a standard. Otherwise you'd be looking at any striker who scores more than 10 goals in a season being worth £35m cos that's what Liverpool paid for Carroll.

Man United paid that much due to the combination of a clause and desperation. Is Cabaye better than Fellaini? On this form, yes. We'll not necessarily get as much for Cabaye as Everton did for Fellaini though.

Clubs will take into account that he wanted away last summer, that he had a poor season last year, and that he's performing out of his skin with a World Cup on the horizon. First bid we get over £15m and his agent and Cabaye will be agitating for a move. I don't think we have much bargaining power unless we finish top 4 and invest in the summer.

He's our player under contract that's as much bargaining power as we need.

Contracts are worth very little when a player wants away.

On the contrary we kept hold of him in august because our valuation wasn't met and it will be exactly the same in January.

He's our player we set the asking price, if he doesn't like it too bad.

Newcastle’s form has mirrored that of their playmaker Yohan Cabaye. The France international was desperate to leave the club at the end of last season and went on strike in the summer when a £10.1m bid from Arsenal was rejected by Ashley.

But the midfielder has refocused since that unpleasant episode and has been hugely impressive, something Pardew feels is a just reward for the club’s refusal to be bullied into selling him.

The club have a gentlemen’s agreement in place with Cabaye and his agent which means he will not agitate to leave again in the January window, although Pardew does not see why he would want to.

“He's in an environment where he's got pole position and he’s benefiting from that,” he said. “You don't always get that. You can get lost at some clubs [and just be a squad player].”

I assume it was a 'one more season' style arrangement then.
