ALAN PARDEW believes too much emphasis has been placed on Newcastle United’s tactics this season.

Instead, the United manager feels being unable to name his strongest XI has hindered the Magpies’ season and explains why his side has not matched the superb start it made 12 months ago.

Pardew has had no problems facing the questions of the fans since taking charge of the Magpies.

With formation and tactics the talk of the city again this week after the loss to Swansea City, Pardew told the Chronicle: “Everybody is entitled to their opinion.

“We are trying to find a way to win games with a lot of our big players missing.

“Whenever they are in the team they will be stronger – whether you play 4-3-3, 4-4-2, three at the back or whatever system you want to play.

“Last year we did not have the problems with the injuries.

“We were playing all sorts of systems and winning. Nobody seemed to notice then.

“Of course, when you lose games it becomes noticeable and people think we should be doing something.

“Well of course, in hindsight that would make sense.

“I wish I could play a game again the day after when we lose, but I cannot.”

Victory against Maritimo tonight would be a step in the right direction and would almost certainly quell some of negativity coming the way of United at the moment.

Pardew added: “We cannot focus on that.

“We do not disregard it, but we cannot factor it in.

“All we can do is win our next game.

“Then a lot of those comments could look silly.”

Better luck in front of goal and more sharpness from his strikers would certainly help Pardew this evening.

Reflecting on the clash with Swansea, Pardew said: “I thought we played quite well with the team we had.

We were a little bit naïve once we conceded the first goal, but that was because we had a lot of inexperience on the pitch.

“We started bombing forward again and trying to get the goal back quickly.

“Up until the opening goal we looked like the better side against a good team, by the way.

“We should have taken the lead.

“I think we would have won if we had scored the first goal although it is easy to say now.”

Pardew suggested he would resist the temptation to unleash Hatem Ben Arfa in the Europa League tonight and feels his sharpness in the Premier League is a result of resting him on continental nights.

He added: “If we had a fans vote he would probably be our player of the season so far.

“It might be because he has sat all of these games out.

“That might be something to do with it.”

Pardew has also confirmed Yohan Cabaye will go under the knife for a groin operation.

He said: “He will have an operation, and we think it is going to be on Friday or Monday.”

He clearly reads the forum an twitter I reckon  he's trying so hard to disprove anything we are saying!

Probably has Carver taking notes from fans in the pubs as well.

Probably has his PA do it and take notes? I probably would.

Still think the bloke's a fraud - especially where his football philosophy is concerned - but we're fucking 5th and he seems a delightful chap to boot. Class season so far.

I posted that on 1st Feb and it still holds (bar the obvious part), although his charm is wearing off slightly with every passing interview. He's either telling porkies or he's in denial, neither of which is exactly brilliant.

If everyone pulls together - from the boardroom in January to the players from tonight - then we'll turn it around. As much as I agree Pardew is the key man in everything and deserving of the most blame for the season so far, he can't do it all himself and he is being let down by others at times too.

We need some quality reinforcements in when the window opens - even just the one or two we should have bought in the summer - but before that we need to adopt some sort of plan on the field and some of our big players need to start showing up a lot more (Cisse, Jonas and Tiote principally). I still think 4-3-3 is the answer, personally, and the switch that would bring us the better balance of quality and success on the pitch, but if he has to revert to the 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 that served him so well early last season to get us winning again then I could just about stomach that.

It's when we play the latter and we're still looking aimless and losing games that it becomes completely unpalatable.

Has the question...

'Why have you never once played the exact system and formation that had us win 8 out of the last 11 games, even when you have had all or most players available?'

...ever been put to him.

He's still got a heck of a lot of credit in the bank with me for the 5th place finish and manager of the year performance - suffering badly from not being able to get our best players all on the pitch together which unfortunately with Cabaye out for the rest of the year then Tiote off to the ACON looks like it'll be the case for much of the forseeable future. Think the lack of game prep time due to Europa matches is a bigger factor than he realised it would be too.

The January window is huge - 2 or 3 decent signings and the season can still be salvaged, another cockup like the summer and the season will be a pretty much a write-off, which will be incredibly frustrating when you think of the momentum lost.

I think Interpolic is right. He's deflecting blame from himself onto the board, which he also (rightly) did at the end of the transfer window (however briefly).

He has a habit of slyly slagging of the board then bigging them up a few days later though, probably involving a quick phone call in between.

Wow ... this guy is in complete meltdown mode. Some of the stuff he's coming out with is just cringeworthy.

Losing respect for the guy very quickly. He sounds completely and utterly clueless.

We have a good number of top quality players in this team at the moment, and we haven't produced anywhere good enough football, and that's a fact. Forget the results even. If we had been playing well people wouldn't be as caught up on them, as it would just be a matter of time before we strung some wins together.

From his quotes he's insinuating the system and tactics don't matter, as long as the first 11 is all out there. Sounds like Souness! Very worrying.

If I were owner and i saw the way the team wa sperforming with the number of decent players we currently have, I certainly wouldn't be looking to buy any more for the manager currently in charge that's for sure.

Pardew man, how are you screwing this all up so quickly.

Those competitions weren't won cause RDM is a special coach more that Chelsea have spent a billion on players in the last few years...Drogba won the CL single handed, fronting a side sitting so deep they were barely on the pitch. See this is the thing about Pards he doesn't give a balanced response there is always and agenda.

Seems to me like he revelled in the limelight of our success last year, and rightly so.

But he seems very touchy about justified complaints about our form, and more importantly for me our very poor play and set penises.

You cant have it both ways Alan.

So you change things for the next game, don't just do exactly the same thing that didn't work this time.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing if you use it.  And yes, people do think you should be doing something, you're the manager.

"I’d be 100% happy to go with the squad we’ve got at the moment" from 30th August.

And to think some people on here were defending our transfer strategy right till the end  :nope:

Why does everything that happens have to be an excuse to have a go at "some people on here"? You mean, some people in the world, some people who have a different view to you. Incredible really.

"Some people" who were wrong at the time and are even more wrong now. Not naming any names, of course...

I'm honestly not bothered about that, failing to strengthen is not the reason we have lost Swansea and West Ham, drawn to Villa, Reading and Sunderland.

Those are games we should be winning with the players we have, there's no point buying players if you don't know a style of play and system that fits the players you have.

Honestly i'd take buying no players in January if it meant Pardew got his head out of his arse and found a system and a style of play that suits the team.

You didn't really get my question. Doesn't matter like.
