Yorkie
From what I've seen of him he'd be pretty well suited to that role, unlike our 2. Yeah. Hugely off-form this season, but from what i've seen he's ideal for the 4-3-3. I think him and Ben Arfa either side of Ba or Cisse would be a top class front line. This is a predictably negative comment, but it is relevant: i really can't get excited about us signing any strikers when Pardew constantly does nothing to get the best out of our truly gifted players. I'm fairly cynical about this rumour altogether tbh. I can't see us chucking another £10m at the forward line without at least one departure. And if it's one-in-out-out with Ba, it's a sideways step at best, given Ba's form. Then, as i've mentioned above, there's the whole thing about our actual tactics going forward (which are still sketchy-to-non-existent). In other words; whinge whinge, moan moan whinge. littlelunchbox
yay another 4-3-3 player. we don't play 4-3-3 Exactly even if he is suited for the wide role you can bet Pardew won't be playing him there, the man just has a habit of playing forwards where they're not suppose to be. There's no sign of changing either.
Guest hydeous
I think it will be a CB for sure + a forward if there are serious enquiries regarding Ba. I'm hoping for a right back too, but won't be too disappointed if we don't strengthen that position in this window. Here's something I didn't realise last season - Cabaye is very much the heart of this team. Future captain.

Ronaldo
We're so easy to hit on the break when we play 4-3-3, in fairness. At times it's beyond embarrassing, and won't be remedied until we buy a CB to get Williamson out of the team and buy at least one midfielder with ability in going box-to-box. And get Tiote back to his best/replaced.

Much of our best football last season in a 4-3-3 was playing a counter attacking game - sitting deep and waiting for the right opportunity to break. That's ideal for the likes of Coloccini. At home against sides who set out to frustrate i'd agree with your assessment and it's probably the main reason why we don't see the likes of Cabaye breaking into the box in the way Nolan used to - which is why it would be so great to get in a centre-half with some genuine power and recovery pace. "Then we went to 4-4-2 and we looked so much better for it and I do not think any fan could argue with that" Actual quotes btw. In that game it was true. There's nothing wrong with variation; the annoying thing earlier in the season was that we were rigidly sticking to it whilst pandering to the opposition. As opposed to setting up to actually win the game in a formation that suited our players, as opposed to one that contained their's. We've made some strides in the last three games, but it's still not totally convincing. The lack of Cabaye and Ben Arfa is a valid excuse, however, you only have to look at Anita to see the disparity in mentalities amongst the front six. Cisse, although he's beginning to mould into that wide role with some nice footwork here and there, is still far from convincing. It was a lot of fun at times, but i can't wait to draw a line through 2012 and just start again after - what will hopefully be - a positive and refreshing transfer window, one way or the other. Clean slate, start again. It's times like these where i wish a winter break could be accommodated into a season, however the fixture pile-up at other times of the season would be too intense. But we are improving, i just hope Pardew doesn't go back on the brief promise of the last three games.

When we play with two banks of four we're dreadful to watch because it exposes the crapness of whoever's out wide and leaves us going front to back, but we're not as easy to hit on the counter, no way in a million years. Things like that can be extremely demoralising and tiring for any player mentally if not physically.

But when we play HBA there, Pardew also gets criticised by some on here because he has the audacity to expect HBA to follow the opposition's full-back's runs. he really can't win with some. I really couldn't give two f***s on what clever quotes that can be drawn out of Pardew's arse, because it's just his usual sweet talking salesman bullshitting that he always does,. he has never really played an orthodox 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 its always some mixture of some frankenstein freaky s*** like Cisse or Ba or Best or whoever the hell he wants mash into the formation to be played outwide. as far as i can remember maybe vs Everton at Goodison. thats it, yeh it fell flat on its arse in the first half, but that is just about as much time he has ever given it, 45 minutes. TherealnorthernTOON
you can hit on the break when you got space, we have to deny the space and therefore push the fullbacks further up field, so they are closer to the attacking wingers when they decide the break is on. Having a defensive midfielder + 2 stoppers should be more then enough to take care of the lone forward.

Wallace
Philippe Auclair was on the radio this afternoon and seemed to think there was a strong possibility that we would get Remy. Surplus to requirements at Marseilles and has not been getting a game and has had injury problems in recent years. Said he is a player that needs to revive his career so definitely fits the blue print. Also said it should be possible to get him cheaper than the price quoted and that 10m euros was a likelier price than £10m. Also said he didn't think Debuchy was likely to happen this window.
