January Transfer Window Latest

Glenn goes undercover

By The Evening Chronicle

Newcastle United manager, Glenn Roeder, is set to go undercover tomorrow to check out one of his transfer targets.

Roeder will travel to Holland to run the rule over one of the players he hopes to bring in during the January transfer window.

But he hasn't asked the home club for a ticket as is the normal practice.

Instead, he will arrive unannounced and pay on the gate before taking his place among the Dutch fans.

Roeder is wise enough to know that should the Dutch club in question see he is there, then, because it is Newcastle United, the price quoted for his transfer target will shoot up.

And, quite naturally, the United boss does not want to alert other clubs to just who he hopes to buy in the January super sales frenzy.

That's why the United boss said today: "I have not asked for a ticket to be left under the name of Newcastle United for me tomorrow, but I will be paying my Euros and going behind one of the goals with the rest of the Dutch fans."

The Chronicle revealed last month that United had been warned off striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar and left-back Urby Emanuelson by their club, Ajax.

United have heeded this warning and have accepted that the highly-rated Dutch pair will not be coming to St James' Park.

But United are looking for a left-back, a central defender and a couple of strikers in January.

A midfielder is not a priority, but there is one in the Premiership United may bring to Tyneside in January on loan until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, there was no rest for Roeder as he took in Arsenal's game with Spurs in the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.

Spurs are due at St James' Park this month and United travel to White Hart Lane at the turn of the year.

United arrived back in Newcastle following only their third trip to Germany in a European competition in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Those players not needing treatment had a warm down yesterday afternoon before being given the weekend off.

They will all report back on Monday morning to start their preparations for their first Premiership meeting with Reading, at St James' Park on Wednesday night.

loan player must be diarra. I hope its a loan with view to permanent otherwise I cant really see the point...

Indeed...

We'll need a Butt replacement in the summer, but it's not as if we need a centre-midfielder now is it. :?

I think we do, someone who can push on and break into the box, we still haven't replaced Bowyer.

The Loan is surely Anal trying to push his SWP's theories to the hilt.

I suppose we could struggle to the season end with Solano, Ramage, Taylor and Carr all capable of babysitting the position.

If we get a LB, CB and two strikers i will be very pleased. Especially if we can snare Distin as the CB.

Bowyer rarely did it anyway!

He still needs replacing though as N'Zogbia is shite through the middle.

Steve Sidwell is the man we should use to fill that void IMO. Won't cost too much with his contract up in the summer.

If we are signing a midfielder it has to be an attacking central one because we simply dont have any.

Joe cole would be an option if he wanted to come here and chelsea wouldnt mind letting him go.

Sidwell would be a great bet.

Arteta and Nolan would be good aswell, but neither are available or affordable.

Joe Cole - you're off your head if you think he's coming here.

Why? He's hardly getting a look in at Chelsea and with the change they've made in formation he won't be anytime time soon, him and Roeder have a close friendship and so do both clubs so I think if we ask for a loan deal then there's a possibility it will be accepted.

Also, why would Reading loan out Sidwell?
