I thought the change was even later still as I think it officially changed for where we lived when the councils 'split'...either way the people who owned the metro must've had a hankering for some traditional colours. The former metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear, is now, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside county councils. Those 5 councils still work a lot together, but the only really formal tie is to Nexus which they all fund to administer Public Transit. Anyway I was born in Jesmond and lived the majority of my childhood in North Tyneside, I have a affiliation to Northumberland but when asked I always say I'm from Newcastle.
