Stifler
And FWIW I don't think smaller clubs should be sacked off altogether. Is a small Portuguese club playing in the Spanish league system really any different to their current existence? I'd argue not. It'd probably be better and offer more potential for growth as a club to be honest. I small Portuguese or Spanish club suffering what would effectively be relegation in favour of the bigger clubs to be a in a league together would not benefit them. They would be in a league with smaller clubs, never attract the crowds for the big teams, and never play against better teams that makes their own players develop. They would also be in a smaller league that would have no TV or sponsorship deals because of the lack of the bigger clubs, meaning they are worse off finically. Village Idiot
I researched a bit the "merger" news and indeed it seems that the Portuguese League is pushing for it. However, I really can't see La Liga going for it for the reasons I mentioned. I'm really against the whole superleague concept, even if it would be class from a big club fan standpoint - since we would make the cut - it would totally suck for the small, storied clubs that would be sacked off as a result. We should work towards propping up the small clubs in big leagues and the smaller leagues in general. UEFA should be more socialist and spread the wealth. For starters, redirecting CL money to the EL so clubs playing in the European second tier could seize it as a chance to grow, would be something easy and with meaningful results. TaylorJ_01
I mean, you'd think the governing bodies would see the potential in having more competitive leagues. Think of all the rabid fanbases all competing for similar success. As it stands, the ones at the top get bored and the ones below get bored. I'm completely bored at the thought of never being able to compete for anything other than survival and mediocrity. I'm sure there are fans of Bayern and the like that are totally bored of smashing every team 5-0. It's just rubbish now. Feeding more money into the EL would be a good step in the right direction, however at the moment they are just rewarding teams scraping into the group stages with HUGE amounts of money. So you'll get the top team in Russia/Kazakhstan/Scandinavia/Ukraine/Portugal etc who, if they can squeeze through, catapulting them miles above the rest of the teams in the league in terms of money. It's scandalous tbh and it's killing our game. The above has happened to Portugal. The fans don't give a f*** anymore.

The College Dropout
It's a relatively recent development too. Not too long ago Deportivo & Valencia won La Liga (Sociedad came within 2 points) with Barca struggling to finish 4th. Now Real have finished second with 85+ points on more than a couple occasions. Smashing 80% of the league in the process.
Disco
It's a difficult one. I agree that it seems bad really to sack off smaller teams, as they have fanbases no matter how small. But if it means a more balanced and competitive European system then that would be worthwhile. The fact we're at the stage where there's only about 5 teams that can win the CL and they're all from big nations is a bit shite. There isn't much that can be done in terms of 'promoting' smaller leagues, in the modern game the collective bargaining powers of bigger leagues means smaller countries don't stand a chance. They generate more money as a collective and the best players will go there. The like of Celtic and Ajax are hamstrung by the simple fact they're from countries with 5-10 million people. This was not a problem before the commercialisation and globalisation of football. I think it's only viable where the leagues are currently on a relative par.
