I never understood where that idea came from - Kevin Nolan around that time said that he’d wanted the move and Nolan advised him to go for it. It is one of the handful of moments where I thought Ashley was absolutely right to do what he did - he played hardball and sold a player for well above what they were worth; it was obvious to anyone with eyes Carroll wasn’t the next big thing, he was a decent PL centre forward having a purple patch. He was more Kevin Davies than Alan Shearer. Dalglish proved once again that he didn’t have an eye for a player.
gbandit
Nah, he was absolute quality and if he hadn’t had persistent injury issues he’d have had a top career in the PL. He was possibly the best at heading the ball the league has seen and he had a top left peg. He was also a nightmare to play against for defenders. Can’t remember if it was his ankles or his back but he was never the same after he left us and had an injury at Liverpool

The Carroll camp were definitely pushing stories to the local press at the time that this was against his will, that Ashley forced him out for the fee etc.
Dr.Spaceman
He was grinning ear to ear in those long shot clips of him after he got off the helicopter. He was absolutely buzzing and so he should have been. He did nowt wrong.

That's interesting and a bit heartbreaking. I can remember making this post and then much later thinking I was stupid for ever thinking it, knowing more about what Ashley was like. Guess it wasn't that far wrong after all. On 01/02/2011 at 17:39, Yorkie said: Devastated that he's gone and massively let down by one person who i thought had the club's best interests at heart. For once i don't think the club has done anything wrong, and i think they should be commended for holding out for such an astronomical fee. Carroll's the cunt in this who's turned his back on the club for nothing but a boost in his wages. Dispicable mercenary bastard who won't be welcomed back in his own city. I don't envy him. Lish007
Yeah think was heartbreaking for me too knowing he was so happy to leave us for Liverpool. Its one of the reasons why I hate Liverpool so much now 🤣
Hovagod
Carroll put in a transfer request on the day. I think at the time there was some sort of confusion, lots of people kind of suggesting that that was because he had been…forced into it, I guess? Strange day. Wallace
Think that was the story at the time - that the club wanted him to put in a transfer request - as they did not want to pay him the bonuses he would have been entitled to.
Menace
Carroll costing more than Suarez is still funny. Crazy how football turns out.

But why would he agree to that? edit: Sorry, being stupid. He agrees because he wants to move and they wouldn’t accept the bid otherwise? Makes sense though doesn’t suit the narrative of the day, which was that he was being somehow bullied into moving Edited 3 hours ago by Hovagod

Yeah I never ever believed that. Then people saying he dived on purpose when he was trying to get Krul(?) sent off because he didn't want to score. I think that was all just protecting their mind from the reality that he wanted to leave his boyhood club for Liverpool. He went for the bag and the bigger team, like most do, and it was naive to think otherwise. Edited 2 hours ago by Erikse

Clouded by us being skint when he came in so we had to hire a few oldies but he's signed some great players over the years. Carroll would be viewed a lot differently without the injuries.
