Keefaz
VAR is terrible. It's taken away more than it's given. Fancy organising a mob, luddite-style, and machine-breaking all VAR equipment. The little microphones and pitchside screens and all that shit. Just wave a flag.
The Prophet
On 13/01/2026 at 22:44, The Prophet said: Generally speaking, they've completely lost the spirit of the offside rule. It was meant to prevent goal hanging and gaining an unfair advantage, not to take minutes pouring over whether someone's limb is marginally offside. Or "the curve of their forehead" for that matter. We've been on the end of some absolutely lifting decisions of late.

Shays Given Tim Flowers
If the part of your body you scored the goal with is offside, it’s offside, so legs, feet, your head if it’s a header. If it’s a part of your body you don’t score the goal with then you’re onside.

stozo
8 minutes ago, Erikse said: What happened to the 5 cm rule? The tolerance level is built into the VAR review. The centimetres of Willock's head that was offside was the amount he was offside after the tolerance level was applied.
AyeDubbleYoo
Honestly don't know how you can solve it, particularly when the rule is combined with the detailed technology we've got. Will always add up to a decision that's completely against the spirit of the rule, but I don't know what you can do about it.

Yorkie
45 minutes ago, Rod said: No, the offside rule is anti-goals. What, independently of VAR? The offside rule is absolutely perfect the way it is. Like almost everything in football, it wasn't designed to be applied with atomic precision. Two utterly abhorrent disallowed goals tonight in our game and the WHU/MU one. Absolutely beyond me how people think this is good for the game.
Heron
Unpopular but as someone who played CB most my years I'd prefer the offside rule to be returned back to its original format. Defending is slowly losing all of its art.

The issue is the VAR and the offside rule as it's written is a recipe for disaster. Edited February 10 by El Prontonise
AyeDubbleYoo
It's the application of the minute detail of the replay that is going to make any offside rule look bad. Even if it was feet then a foot would be an inch ahead of another foot in a weird position. Like I said, I can't think of any way to use VAR to referee offside well. Of course you'd still get "daylight by a centimetre" but at least it would require the attacker to be clearly ahead of play and gaining an advantage. stozo
1 minute ago, LFEE said: Wenger rule. As the decision will ultimately be in the spirit of the game. The Wenger rule will have exactly the same issues. You'll have VAR hyper-analysing whether any 'daylight' exists and they'll be some incredibly marginal calls. Ultimately it's a case of do you want VAR where 99% of offsides are correctly but you have reviews lasting several minutes and goals snatched away or do you want to do it the old way and accept that now and again they'll be some shocking mistakes in big games. stozo
1 minute ago, AyeDubbleYoo said: The old way please. I think that's a totally fair take. It's a really tricky one as it's fucking shit when without VAR there is a clear error but equally I didn't celebrate Willock's goal when it went in because I knew either way it would be a tight VAR call. Takes the joy out of the game a bit.
El Prontonise
Just admit you'll have the odd error and get away with VAR and everything being done to ruin the game. Offsides have always been the hardest thing to call in football and linesman at the top were pretty good before the nonsense.
