I don't think it's a case of blaming the fans or city, but a reflection of how much he has bought into the (southern) media stereotype of Geordie fans: easily excitable, over-emotional, high expectations, get on the players'/managers'/club's back easily, etc. It's an easy out for any grumbling from the fans, to dismiss it as an overreaction; "You know how those Geordies are..." I try to avoid reading or hearing anything Pardew has to say but whenever I come across any of his interviews the patronising tone when referring to the fans or city tends to be a constant. I wonder if there are any consequences for not attaining that goal (which tbh I see as very likely). Pressure Pressure is a soldier going off to Afghanistan, it was going down a pit for a 12 hour shift to put bread on the table. It's not pressure playing in front of 50,000 people who want you to win a game of football. If it is then they should find another way of earning a living. It's a weak excuse and one that he has started peddling with more regularity over the last 18 months; I don't think people are slamming it in isolation. It's also a particularly irksome little dig, given the easy ride he himself has got from the SJP crowd, certainly in comparison to other managers that we've had. The better managers have had the crowd working as a positive and teams hated coming here, if our negative manager is rubbing off on the fans then good. But at the end of the day - this is not a chicken/egg conundrum: the team comes first. It's the team/manager/performance that should be the first to catalyse a reaction from the crowd; not the other way around. When the club is getting things right, the crowd is great. When the club is getting things badly fucking wrong, the crowd is anxious and easily get their heckles up. You only need to look at that 2-0 defeat to Man City in the 5th season. The crowd was great that day even though we were fairly comfortably beaten. Because the club was making a concerted effort to achieve something and making a genuinely decent stab at it. At the moment though? Fuck off, they're never gonna get an easy ride. Mind you - that is to say they haven't; I've not been to the game this season so I can't really comment on what the crowd has been like. But if it's been bad, suck it. The club needs to stop behaving like shit bastards, from top to bottom. The anxiety in the crowd will soon dissipate. Pardew's got no right calling it 'over the top', or whatever.
