Correct call that he's got a long ban, imo. Nothing to do with him as an individual, his character or his prior disciplinary record: the FA needs to set the example that you can't be aggressively putting your hands on officials. Di Canio got longer for less, imo.

Yeah, I think that's very harsh, it's not like he swung for him is it. Barely touched him; 5 would have been about right.

He shoved him and then continued to square up to him after being given a red card

His ban can be construed as fair enough only when all other players suffer the very same ban.

Bruno Fernandes should've also been banned the same but seeing as he's the untouchable darling for some strange reason, it seems Mitro had to be the benchmark...or will he be the benchmark?

Let's see.

Mitro was stupid to do what he did and ref's have to be protected by threats of violence or intimidation  and a strong message sent...but let's not see cherry picking from this day forward with this stuff.

There hasnt been anything like this since Di Canio.

Bruno Fernandes shoved a linesman. You can argue it wasn’t as bad as Mitrović, but it was certainly worth more than 0 punishment.

No way the Fernandes push was as bad as Mitrovic. I hate Fernandes as much as the next bloke, but it wasn't as bad.

The aggression of Mitrovic and the way he leant forward in Kavanagh's face made it far more threatening.

As a former referee, you're going to be fearing for your safety far more if a player squares up to your face, pushes/pulls you, invades your space and points at you, launching a tirade of abuse.

Compare that to a slight push in the back and you turn to see the player running away...

There's zero comparison.

That said, Bruno should have been punished in some way post incident.

He did, but he wasnt agressive, up in the face, chasing the referee ready to go head to head.

So your rule would be "you can push the referee, but don't do it too aggressively and don't go head to head"?

I just think there is a very big difference between the two. If Fernandes gets a 1 game ban, and Mitro gets 8. Fine. They are not comparable.

I would say 5 for Fernandes, if Mitrovic is worth 8. I'd accept at 4 at a push. He got pissy at the linesman and shoved him in the back, it wasn't hard but there was aggression.

8 game  i mean sure yeah, a ban is deserved for someone who puts his hands on a ref but I'm sure the ref is perfectly OK with no mental, physical damage as a result.

8 games is laughable like [emoji38]

Bans need reducing across the board.

Agree, think you and I have been in total agreement over this in general.

I take the point that they sort of need to make an example of players in these situations, but I also think that as a byproduct referees seem like even more untouchable (figuratively and literally) overprotected power whores than they already are when in situations like this it's really disproportionate and arguably inconsistent (Fernandes on the linesman)

If they want to make an example of Mitrovic, fine, but I think it's not going to be completely without negative consequences that'll slap them in the face re the whole 'respect' thing imo.

Seems disproportionate to me considering what abuse refs let slide every game, they really should be clamping down on hounding the ref, screaming on his face etc every game if they want to make any sort of statement.

Think it's fair enough with the level of aggression he showed. Even after the red card it looked like he was going to kill him [emoji38]

Needs to an example set for that type of behaviour. It's not much of an issue for the top end of the game but at low levels refs are in actual danger of being attacked for decisions they make.

The ban is important as it sends a message that this will not be tolerated. Agree that the Fernandez shove should also have been addressed.

if you leave this unpunished then it will continue to filter down into grass roots football. Youth, Sunday league etc will copy as its “OK to do this”.

I stopped refereeing (doing competitive youth games) because it wasn’t worth the verbal abuse any more.

All the people who are saying an 8 games is too long or ridiculous. You do me a favour and you go ref on a Saturday or Sunday park, and then tell me if you think it's too long. Even do kids under 10's games for a glimpse from parents.

What amateur players see in a professional game we see on a park pitch, and Mitrovic's push, that push becomes a punch, intimidation that is so violent and so full of vitriol that it scares even the toughest of people, or vandalism to your car or whatever revenge they can extract.

All for getting a decision RIGHT. Please go try it, that is all you need to do.
