r0cafella
He's played far too deep last two games that's for sure. That's the thing he's deep when we have the ball and often not looking to create passing angles for himself to receive the ball but he's all over the shop when we need him to sit deep and the opposition has possession. He's really lacks discipline and I dont feel he's suited to playing centre midfield at all personally. I know some will want to see him play a more box to box role but he lacks the stamina and pace to get up and down Imo.
Dr Venkman
Responsible for their goal today, very disappointing to see a professional footballer ball watching when he's marking the only threatening player on the opposing team.
GeordieT
Not convinced by him at all, he does a lot of pointing but his own positioning is often woeful, be presses when he shouldn't and leaves so much space behind him. When he has the ball be often slows the game down whilst he figures out which long pass to attempt, great when they come off but when they don't it leaves players like Janmaat way out of position with Shelvey unable to cover the space. Yup, lacks any positional discipline. All the comments from Swansea fans about him being a bit of a 'luxury player' are spot on really. He is very difficult to accommodate tactically. Gallowgate Toon
He's not brilliant tactically but I can't help feel his positioning is being blown way out of proportion. He's not charging around leaving gaps every 2 minutes. He occasionally leaves his post but shouldn't be the furthest back midfielder. Simple as that, really. He's still a CM through and through. He's quicker and fitter than I thought he was too, he's someone that can drive us forward if he's given license to.
Dave
Didn't realise he's a booking away from a two game ban as well.
Lush Vlad
He's played far too deep last two games that's for sure. This. It works when there is space in behind for him to try the Hollywood diagonal pass. But yesterday, he was basically playing centre back and the game was never set up to suit. Since getting the armband, he has really started to graft IMO. I like him.
ujpest doza
He needs Tiote on to allow him to play higher up the field or De Jong to support him and fill in for him. Him and Wijnaldum don't work.
Heron
I've liked what I've seen from him. He was doing loads of winding up and niggly shit off the ball yesterday and his range of passing is fantastic. If only SDJ was more mobile they'd arguably be the best possible pairing. AyeDubbleYoo
I haven't been impressed by him but I think he could be an important part of an improved team. At the moment I don't think he was exactly what we needed, but he will be a good signing if we stay up and improve the team.
r0cafella
He will always struggle too, one of his main outlets is balls in behind but we don't have a striker capable of getting in behind.
Heron
We need Mitro as the target man and Perez playing off him on the shoulder of the last man with someone like De Jong or Wijnaldum in behind. Townsend on one wing and dare I say it Sissoko on the other with Shelvey mopping up as a deep lying playmaker. Defensively minded and competent full backs and obviously the two CBs and keeper. For me the issue is Sissoko and virtually all of our CBs need chasing and replaced. Then need to buy at least two LBs as well.
sugoinufc
problem is we dont have the right partner for him in midfield. Tiote could be an option - where is he btw? gini and shelves is as good as it gets atm. If we stay up. new dm gini shelvey
Guest firetotheworks
I have a lot of time for players that don't shy away and try to make things happen. He was pretty much man-marked yesterday and that stopped us, but he kept trying to force the issue and I liked that.
mozy
I think Saivet could be the ideal partner for him, having to play DM with Gini is basically asking him to be the creator, holder, ball winner and organiser all in one.
Jayson
I dont get why Saivet's not getting a chance, he's been good in each game I've seen him play.
The College Dropout
Another with a fairly poor first touch and slow feet. Once he gets moving he's a decent dribbler but the first 3 touches aren't great. Doesn't handle pressure well so he goes deeper to get more time on the ball. It's one thing to have that problem at the highest level like Alonso- it's another when Kirchoff and M'vila can shut you down. Having a more combative CM partner might help him with that. The College Dropout
Just as much SDJ with a very solid first touch and quick thinking helped him. But Sunderland also retreated giving him space.

I disagree I think the gap between our central midfielders and centre halves is huge it's like a chasm either we press as a team try to be compact, Shelvey is prone to pressing at stupid times which leaves our centre halves very vulnerable. If we had more tactically aware players this wouldn't be an issue though...as they'd all either press or not collectively. Another thing, players would slot in to cover if they had more thought

Another thing, players would slot in to cover if they had more thought I agree in part but I don't think that's universally the case, England tried it for years with Gerrard and Lamport and couldn't get it right, Arsenal also have struggles with this line of thought as well. As you said though Heza we don't have much choice given the other players we have available.
sbnufc
He's on 9 yellow cards now (one in the FA Cup - does that count towards the 10 for a ban?) So he'll be getting a 2 game ban soon enough you'd assume
sbnufc
Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey feels like he is "going to school again" following the recent arrival of manager Rafael Benitez. The Magpies have lost to leaders Leicester and drawn with local rivals, and fellow strugglers, Sunderland since the Spaniard took over two weeks ago. "You're always being watched - you feel like you're on trial if you like," Shelvey told BBC Newcastle. "Everyone's looking to impress and being a lot busier than normal." The 24-year-old continued: "But that's part and parcel of football, you need to show what you're about. "When a new manager comes in, it's like going to school again." Following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland, the Magpies remain next to bottom, one place below the Black Cats, and three points adrift of safety - although both teams have a game in hand over 17th-placed Norwich City. The Tynesiders have four points fewer than at the same stage of the 2008-09 season, when they were last relegated from the top flight. However, Shelvey is confident Benitez can make a big difference during the two-week international break. "People are listening to what he says. His record speaks for itself," he said. "[The break] will be a good chance to really knuckle down. We've not had much time since he's come in because everything has been a bit rushed." Newcastle are next in action against Norwich at Carrow Road on 2 April. The former Swansea midfielder added: "Rafa will come up with a game plan because that's what he does. "I'm sure we'll go to Norwich and give a very good account of ourselves." http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/35867154
Barnes23
Erratic as fuck, terrible decision making and positioning at times. Might be a handy player in the championship.
