I doubt half the c***s who bleat on about the poppy realise the context of its meaning or significance historically. I refuse to wear one today because it's now a political football and a money making scheme. Hang me!

That's basically my thoughts as well.

Are these fuckers now bottom and we have spent the whole time on the poppy debate instead of all bursting out laughing?

Should everyone who dislikes the Royal Family also look for employment in a different country?

Who mentioned the Royal Family?

Surely by your logic that if we dislike something that we pay taxes toward we should seek employment in another country?

The Royal Family is a large part of our history, just like the army

There's a big difference between disliking something, and actively hating something and constantly making statements (political or otherwise) about it.

Like I said earlier, if he really feels that strongly about it, go and play in another country.

why should he have to play in another country because he doesn't wear a poppy? It's not a legal requirement and everyone who lives here is entitled to their own view. Jingoistic poppy fascism is such bollocks.

It is. It's proper embarrasing but it's likely that people who've lost family members during service for the British Army were in the crowd and watching on tv when he's openly making his pathetic little gesture turning his back to them, whether you agree with the sentiment of the poppy, the minutes silence, or the national anthem and/or believe it's jingoistic shite openly making a public stand like that is clearly disrespectful. "Fuck the British Army and fuck your deed kids hahaha I'm proper ginger and wild"

He's a proper little cock and the backwards as fuck logic the people of Derry are brought up with shouldn't be just accepted because it's their opinion in a free country, the same as the opinion of the jingoistic poppy knackers clearly isn't.

 what? what has the anthem got to do with the military anyway? so by your logic every single person should be forced to sing and stand for the national anthem because there might happen to be family members of the britsh army in the vicinity. Do me a fucking favour man

The anthem was played as they were making a display of respect towards people who have been killed at war. Whether you believe that is over the top or jingoistic or whatever it isn't really the place to be making a public display of disrespect.

'The People of Derry' get a free pass to be antagonistic arseholes because some tragedy happened about 50 year ago.

If he doesn't want to wear a poppy or agree with the whole thing, let it be, that's what the men and women of WW2 battled for - people's freedom etc., which included freedom of speech.

Again I personaly don't wear the poppy because of what it now symbolises, I don't need to adorn a poppy to show respect or appreciate what the men and women of this world did during WW2. I honour them every day by living my life the way I do which in some kind of way I owe to them through their heroics.

At this time of year I reflect massively on that era, their sacrifices, their loss, their bravery and I thank my lucky stars I live in the world I do. It's not perfect, but it sure as hell beats the world they all fought to rid us of because that was some bad shit...

I'm very pro British but the decision whether to wear a poppy or not is exactly that. It's not an obligation and forcing it upon individuals is the direct opposite to what was being fought for... Freedom.

That being said I am massively proud of our armed forces and servicemen and women. Soldiers don't make wars they fight them.

McCleans decision to not wear a poppy isn't what makes him a cunt for me. He just is a cunt.

How many Germans, Italians, French, Spanish etc etc have died at the hands of our armed forces by the way?

I will admit though I find it irritating the whole anti-poppy mentality that's seemingly growing amongst younger people. It might be that I am stereotyping but it seems like something that isn't intended to be political is being made so and it feels like people try to avoid wearing them for fear of being labelled some sort of nationalist or fascist.

I have friends and family serving in the forces and some of which are in the likes of South Sudan providing health care in the midst of a civil war. Themselves a target for either force potentially. We should be extremely proud of people like this.

How is it a strawman? He literally went out of his way to disrespect war dead and you're saying it's his right. Or was turning his back to a display of respect towards war dead not him going out of his way to disrespect war dead?

You're having a go at people being 'dragged to a level of ridiculous nationalism and chest beating patriotism' yet letting other people off for being dragged to a level of ridiculous hatred and chest beating wankery.

Anyway we'll not agree. I reckon the over the top hatred of the British Army (many of which is just working class kids with nothing else obvioiusly available to them) from the people of Derry is pathetic and they need to let it go. That doesn't mean they have to agree with the actions of the British Army or even wear poppies.

I can only speak for myself, but personally the poppy means fuck all, it's a political football and a means to make money these days. It's not a symbol of anything. You do not need to wear one at all to remember those that faught in previous wars much less respect them. I'm sure the men and women of WW2 do not care whether you wear a pin or not that cost a quid or so simply to remember them or to show respect. It's a modern thing this whole poppy issue. English football 1980, no minutes silence or the poppy sowed onto strips etc.

Again it's a political football and a money making scheme. On the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month I, as an individual, will reflect on all those involved and say a private thank you, a private prayer even despite being an athiest, remembering them, thanking them. The best thing I can do in their honour is to live life to the full, to do what many were not fortunate to do, to do what they fought to enable the likes of us to do. LIVE!

There are a lot of Northern Irish sportsmen working in England from both sides of the divide, and McClean is held up as an anomaly, most I've seen talk about these issues are interested in leaving this stuff in the past and moving on. You can look at him and think "good for him", or you can think "thank fuck most aren't like him", McClean can make everyone happy.

I'll have a look, if it isn't I'm talking shite

I remember him turning his back before a game when at West Brom and the reason (at least reported) was in defiance to British war dead. If I'm talking bollocks and it was just literally him not wanting to be involved in the national anthem with no association arminance day to  then I take it all back  I don't really have any issue with him not wearing the poppy although I find it slightly weird.

I don't know how you find it weird him not wearing the poppy. The poppy commemorates those who died in service to the British Army. Some of those will have been those who killed innocent people who were neighbours of his family members. Simple as that really
