AyeDubbleYoo
Future planning is massive here as well... maybe we could win a few more games by going attacking but Rafa has to prepare everyone meticulously for next season. I'd just like to see some small changes like start Atsu and one of the fullbacks and buy a creative #10.
Bimpy474
Future planning is massive here as well... maybe we could win a few more games by going attacking but Rafa has to prepare everyone meticulously for next season. I'd just like to see some small changes like start Atsu and one of the fullbacks and buy a creative #10. I'd say they are fairly big changes, they are in fact the key to Rafa's 4-2-3-1 and game tactics. Good crossing attacking fullbacks who provide your only width, and a creative clever number 10. None of which we have right now. The full backs could be sorted (ish) by picking Lazaar and Yedlin, who far better at the attacking side of the game than Dummett and Anita. As for the number 10, we need to buy one as Diame and Perez aren't good enough for it. I reckon Rafa thinks they're ok for the Championship, with big upgrades coming in the Premier imo, if we go up of course.
TRon
I think while a new #10 would be great next season, it's not that important right now, Perez and Diame are more than good enough in this division. I'm more concerned about getting the ball to the attacking players in the first place, and that's where you need a better alternative to Shelvey than Colback, and we need to get far more from the wide positions. Dummett and Gouffran on the same wing is killing our football.
Yorkie
Daft thing is, even on a night like Monday where we played shite and could barely break the opposition down, we still had three good-to-verygood chances* and (yet another) stone wall penalty turned down. *Gayle shot in the first half, Clark header from a corner, Mitro header from a corner. Gouffran flashed a header across the face of goal as well.

Obviously don't want to go overboard when you consider we are riding high, but we've had enough poor performances at home to think there are things we could do better. Paully
Daft thing is, even on a night like Monday where we played s**** and could barely break the opposition down, we still had three good-to-verygood chances* and (yet another) stone wall penalty turned down. *Gayle shot in the first half, Clark header from a corner, Mitro header from a corner. Gouffran flashed a header across the face of goal as well. Yep and another blatant penalty not given (at 0-0)! We must have been denied double figure stone-wallers this season! Figures 1-0 Football
Was the stone wall penalty when Gayle was hauled down in the box at a free kick? It looked a certain penalty at the time, I've not seen a replay of it though.
Hanshithispantz
Aye, his shirt was being pulled in the run up and then their defender smothered him to the ground stopping him from going for the ball. It was a stone wall penalty like.

Yep - I sit just behind the goal and I had Gayle 1st so I was watching his movement for the corner and it was absolutely blatant! I haven't seen it again on TV mind! Figures 1-0 Football
Makes me laugh when I read on other forums, other club's supporters saying that the referees are shit and biased towards us. If they'd actually watched any of our matches, it's the complete opposite.

Hanshithispantz
It's definitely different this year like, I've had a look at a few and most seem adamant the FA and their referees favour us because we're a 'big club'. It's clear bullshit like, we've had some horrific calls against us. We do the same in the Prem with the top sides.

The point being, the football isn't good enough to get the ball into the last third anyway, or at least it hasn't been in some home games this season. Yorkie
Can't speak for other teams but we must have had at least five stonewall penalties denied, and that's just in the games I've watched. Monday night, Ipswich, Fulham, Forest all just off the top of my head.

madras
Interesting thread: http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,72157.0.html Spot the similarities. What are the similarities beyond on both occasions we have a better away record than home ? We currently have a better squad than our opposition, we didn't back then and that sways everything. Dave
Better results away from home Much debate about why this was Discussion about suitability of formation Desire for two strikers Requirement for more flair Need more attacking intent Do we have defensive manager? Struggle against teams that play aggressively at SJP Criticism of SJP atmosphere/pressure Apart from that, fuck all. Funnily enough it sorted itself out in the end. madras
Did you see my second sentence ? I can understand if the circumstances were similar but they really aren't. That was a team who had just been promoted with a manager some thought didn't have much control over the playing side (senior players controlling things etc)and many thought would struggle, this is by all accounts the best squad in the division with a manager who shouldn't be in theis division.
