I notice a nazza06 comment there, in the train video, who signed up here today. Idiot.

actually when i first saw the video i saw it as jsut a bit of harmless banter between the newcastle and frankfurt fans, i didn't know anything about racism going on.

Fair play, mate.  I did mean idiot in an "eejit" type of sense, wasn't being serious.

How could he not know there was any racism involved when his comment was singing the Kebab song?

I don't see how that was a harmless bit of banter singling out one bloke because he was Turkish.  Why wasn't there

a song about a bratwurst shop??

The guy didn't look bothered atall and i saw it in the same light i do when people call me "haggis" or mention "skirts" to me (meaning kilts) because I'm from Scotland. I see the light hearted side of things like this and so without knowing about the attack on the Turkish bloke in the stadium I wasn't aware that the chanting was meant in a racist way. Hope you can understand where i'm coming from.

I have to admit, I struggled to see what was racist in the video, maybe I just missed something.  The kebab shop line was perhaps a little distasteful, but racism?  If anything it's just a poor generalisation.

hmmm packi shouldnt be an insult.....as packi-stan = pure land

Yes but used in a derogatory way it is. Just like referring to someone's skin colour as black isn't racist but calling them a black bastard is.

They didn't (allegedly) say paki bastard though.

It would be the same as saying 'your just a town full of blacks' don't twist things.

What's more embarrassing than it being sung is people then trying to make excuses and suggest it isn't racist tbh.

The scuffle in the stadium was not a Turk getting attacked but a German who had been hurling abuse and baiting the away fans for the majority of the first half until eventually a handful snapped and had a go back at him.

Anybody else confirm this or do we just take the word of one person of a football forum? (no offense to the OP)

ive heard that sung at quite a few games by our supporters, particulary at games in the birmingham area

iklgizmo has heard it being sung before, haven't been to any away games in the Birmingham area so I can't confirm this but I'm sure others there yesterday will be able to confirm it was being sung.

i've been to villa away, blackburn away etc and havn't heard it

Quick! Quick! Call out the 'PC' Police!!!  bluelaugh.gif

Yeah, I was thinking much the same meself....

The righteous moral shock horror brigade are damning everybodys eyes and tutting up a storm....some people do forget theres a real world out there sometimes, eh ?

I believe it's you who has forgotten there's a real world. So fine, you like a bit of the old racism. Football violence as well is it? Do you miss the old days? Bring a bunch of bananas next home game, that's always good for a laugh.

The thought police are out, eh ?

Tit.

Freedom of thought never mind speech taboo with racist screechers like yourself eh ?

And care to explain why you dragged "racism" into this ?

Where are the black people mentioned ?

(I actually DO have black friends - and have no problem whatsoever with black people. I dont PRETEND to, like you lot)

Curious how creeps like you mouth off only ONE way about racism anyways. Theres plenty of it done by the very people this subject is about.

Selective blindness, charlie.

Dont lecture morality when you have none yourself.

What's more embarrassing than it being sung is people then trying to make excuses and suggest it isn't racist tbh.

Or even more - the pompous conceited tits lecturing others from pedestals about morality.

A "Turk" sounds better to the racist screechers, mate.

They've never had a problem with massaging truth until it fits their ranting.

It was the day that all that came out about the UK - US plane bomb plot

SSSSHHHH !!!!! Musn't mention that !!!!!

It never happened and its "racist" to say it did !!!!!!

I haven't heard it in the last couple of seasons but definately heard it at games in the Midlands prior to that.

I also read this on another forum but to be honest it still doesn't really mean you should lamp him just because he was being mouthy, now if he threw the first punch then that's a different matter.

To tie into another thread http://www.newcastle-online.com/nufcforum/index.php/topic,24473.0.html "Football firms do they still exist" after a little look on the web it seems the Mackems are healthily represented by people/kids who claim to be "firms". They also claim to have a nice line in racial violence/hatred, so all in all it's good to see the Mackem's are getting used to the idea of being a Championship side.

So come on Newcastle we're a bit classier than these sorts of mackem scum, if it's good enough for them it's certainly NOT good enough for us.

The only people I'm 'lecturing' as you put it, are people making excuses for the singing, if indeed it took place. Although, as I was once at Coventry away when it was sang, I can believe it happened. I was embarrassed then too. I'd also love you point out how I was being conceited in what I said.

Fair enough. Should've enlarged on it maybe.

While I agree (to an extent) it irritates the shit out of me some people shouting "racism" at the drop of a noun, and then thinking themselves moral guardians. Note the "Mohammad cartoon" marches threatening (promising) mass murder and beheadings, and yet the only arrests were people shouting angry comments at the bigots.

THAT creates race hate, NOT a handful of beer swilled prats singing an abusive one liner to rival fans.

What about calling someone from India a paki?  How about calling someone from Nigeria a nigger?

Presumably this argument is that paki isn't racist because it's short for pakistan and the fans weren't being racist by implying that having lots of "pakis" in your town is a bad thing, because football fans are known for just singing non-insulting facts about the other teams city like "You've got the second largest bridge in england" and "You're just a town full of grey squirrels".

i don't think its racist, but wouldn't neccesarily join in

The word 'just' makes it racist.

However,

Brit(ain)

Scot(land)

Paki(stan)

means that it shouldnt have negative connotations. Unless 'Brit' is offensive.

how does the word just make it offensive?

i don't understand why everyone gets so defensive about things like this

when people sing the fulwell end...do people start huge threads about it?

no-one sang pakis are cunts which would be racist, and which i would totally disagree with

The word 'just' makes it racist

No, it doesn't.

Racism is in the eye (or ear in this case) of the beholder.

Why is it, for instance, that some do not see a woman who goes to a job interview at a school sans veil, gets job on that behest, yet decides to make a lot of trouble wearing veils to teach (using OUR money to sue), or dozens of similar cases as NOT being racist, but anything in the other direction IS ?

Its the hypocritical double standards that get me.

If all sides were panned, that would be good. We could all unite and give the bigots/racists (an over used word if ever there was one) whatever you want to call them the SAME abuse.

I'd say it was more acceptable than demanding mass murder because of a cartoon (done in another country by ONE person) though, wouldnt you ?

It suits the Pedestal PC to say it's offensive - they have to a large extent created the bad feeling amongst the pakistani community as it is, with their constant "its islamaphobic" bleating into their ears. So...the pakistani decended people dont think "Hey ! My family is doing so much better in the west, thank you GB !" Its..."They're all against us - they are all islamaphobic, insulting my religion...etc etc" with the end results as we have seen in the past few years with terrorist butchery and foiled terrorist butchery. If someone was whispering in YOUR ears like these PC vermin are doing to the Pakistani community (who are also getting it from hate preachers too, remember - nutters who shouldnt have been allowed in here and living on benefits to whip up hate) I think you would be psychotic and easily offended too.

It's not the word it's the context.  The phrase You're just a town full of Pakis makes it clear that being a town full of Pakis is a bad thing and a reason to take the piss.

I suppose it's a racist term (i.e. Paki, not only because of the word 'just' in this context) because it's used (or has been) as a derogatory term. It's not a word I would use to address an Asian person, would you? It's about context really though as it's used in Australia, for example, when talking about the Pakistan cricket team, etc. and it isn't intended to be or considered to be racist there. It's a strange one though. Similarly I wouldn't say 'darky' to someone as that would be considered offensive (even though you could argue they have dark skin). I do think that it's impossible to have a proper debate about racism though as people who use a term, even if they don't mean it to be offensive, are lumped in with the people who think all minorities should be deported. Anyway, like I said, it's the context in which the word was used imo.

I don't think racism is in the ear of the beholder, it's in the intention of the speaker. I can't believe anyone is honestly suggesting that 'just a town full of Pakis' isn't intending to be racist.

And it's pretty pointless to compare it to the cartoon debacle, what has the rightness or wrongness of that got to do with the rightness or wrongness of this?
