We also gave up on players like Krafth and Lascelles as squad players, blasted them if they were rusty when given the chance, but when injuries struck and they got gametime it didn't take that long until they started playing pretty well with a run of games. We have a history on completely giving up on players only for this exact scenario to happen. I think you are really overexaggerating about Longstaff. He's not great, but he's not completely shit either.

Truly think he has been lately.

Hard for me defend other peoples viewpoints, but i have never thought Krafth and Lascelles were that bad.

I think most players will look bad when barely playing at all. Even Tonali looked mediocre until he got a couple of starts in a row. If Murphy had been an impact sub this season, I'm confident that we would have classed him as a Championship player right now.

Maybe most will, not sure about that. But there certainly are those who dont need gametime to look ok, and those are the ones we need to get as squad players.

I mean even Eddie who loves the guy has only used him for 75mins in total the last 20 PL games.

Which is completely in line with my comments about role, as Tonali has been fit through that period. If Tonali got injured instead of Joelinton, do you think Miley or Willock would have taken that role? I don't. I think the only reason he preferred Willock despite him not doing much either is solely because of position and complementing Bruno and Tonali. Why are we completely disregarding role as a factor, and think Howes squad selection is all about what players he likes the most? Everyone should know that this is not how managers picks the team.

Position, whatever you want to call it. Bruno - Joelinton - Willock has never worked that well. I'd assume the same would be the case with Miley over Willock in that midfield. As such Howe has preferred Longstaff alongside Bruno as Longstaff can cover more room. Tonali was a direct replacement to Longstaff in the team.

By the way. It's interesting that you talk about how useless Longstaff has been when playing lately, when you yourself points out that he has played 75 min in the last 20 games. Does that mean that your opinion about him as a backup as of late is based on those 75 minutes?

Role/position whatever you call it, Tonali's isnt the same as Longstaff's. Tonali plays as a number 6 and Longstaff is a box to box. No reason that those two roles cant be on the pitch at the same time.

He also played the full FA cup matches vs lower league opponents. But sure, "lately" could have been replaced with last time ive seen him.

Cant remember him being good for a long long time.

If Tonali gets injured, Bruno plays nr. 6 and Longstaff most likely comes in for Tonali imo. This is literally how we set our team up for most games before Tonali came in. Longstaff was never going to come in for Joelinton when he got injured, because the balance was better with Miley/Willock alongside Bruno and Tonali. That can obviously change when a different player gets injured instead.

This is going to be my last post in this boring discussion back and forth. But we can atleast agree on the balance being better without Longstaff, just not the reason why ;)

As mentioned earlier I wouldn't really care if we sold him. I just think it's more likely that we will keep him than what people think. Especially if he doesn't push for a transfer. It's more about discussing likelyhood than a wish from my side. That's all. I agree that he probably wants to leave, though, so all of this probably won't matter anyways.

  • 2 weeks later...

I know the saying "never accept the first bid" stands as a little life lesson but if anyone goes to £10m+ then I'd be accepting it. I'd not want to run the risk of them walking away from the deal

Would be best for Sean to go and hopefully be a starter for a premier league team that needs a lot of work done off the ball. He’s never going

to be a great player on the ball, the league is too fast for him on that front but he can be a useful player for certain teams and it would be great to see him make the most of the rest of his career, as it’s not going to happen here

Feels like the right time for him to move, he's well and truly a fringe player now and Miley is often preferred to come on ahead of him.

He's done incredibly well for us and I'd love to see him establish himself in another Premier League team, because he's definitely good enough to do so. At his best he's a one man engine room for your midfield and in the right setup he'll chip in with a few goals.

Probably the first sensible thing you've said all day.

Sean will work for the team and has a decent engine on him. I think he normally needs a run of games to find his way as many players do and seems very much a confidence player. He's nowhere good enough progressively with the ball, his first touch is like my shot  and for the positions he gets into his finishing is shocking.

I can't understand the negative posts on here regarding Sean. I personally would keep him. He's no Lionel Messi but he can not half get up and down that pitch. He has great stamina and can actually pop up for a goal or two. Keep him.

You can’t understand the negative posts? Have you watched him play football at any point in the last year?

He’s very clearly not good enough for where the club want to get too. Recoup some money for him before he walks away for free.

I’d keep him as well in part because we’re at the stage of needing to add players, not lose them. One or two injuries and he’s important again.

It wasn’t too long ago he was a regular in a team that got us 4th and then didn’t look out of place at all in the champions league. His main problem is that he got replaced by one of the best players in the world and therefore looks a worse player than he actually was in comparison.
