The amount of times that he was caught in possession was ridiculous.  A class midfielder doesn't do that.  Bruno is similar actually.

His defensive work off the ball today was close to magnificent, so many tackles and headers out of our box while we were under the cosh. On the ball he can get caught out and be clumsy but i'd guess EH loves his off the ball work.

There was one really poor one and couple where it’s hard to really fault him too much. Just watched the match again as I was in a pub without sound live and thought he was really good today overall.

Yep - I was anticipating that we would cash in on Joelinton over the last 12 months - I don't think we'd necessarily get our original money back, but in terms of his amortised fee it would have been a significant gain.  He's not as good as the other two LW options, and the only midfielder he's better than is Longstaff - and I'd say that's fine margins.

 

In an ideal world, this wouldn't even need to be considered.

Defensively he was really good today, felt like he was at his best but definitely had his pocket picked a few times when he shouldn't have.

 

He probably gets away with those moments against lesser opposition but needs to be more switched on when it's against the best teams.

 

Overall though, he's an absolute asset to us and people lamenting that we didn't sell him or wanting us to sell him is a bit strange.

 

I'll let the club worry about PSR but I don't want Joelinton leaving even if technically he isn't as good as the top players.

He just isn't a midfielder.  I never said he wasn't a good player.  I doubt Isak would be much good at left back, or Bruno at centre forward

 

Joelinton looks really good to me at LW, with someone like Willock behind him in midfield.  He uses his power and pace to cause defences trouble - and his touch can be excellent

Just my opinion of course, but Longstaff doesn't offer a great deal less in midfield.  He's not as good defensively, but his passing and goalscoring record is better

Not in my view - his best season was 22/23 when he played the majority of his games at LW

A lot of that was due to him and Willock interchanging, he wasn't your typical LW and both thrived due to that

have you not noticed how he breaks up play with his octopus legs? He;s effective wide left in a different manner but he.;s less of a starter there for me

Agreed, he often dropped back - and it was great when they were together- also, Willock is a better midfielder than Joelinton, so that helped

I wouldn’t start him there either, because we’ve got so many good LW options.  But my starting midfield (assuming a three) would be Willock-Bruno-Tonali

I’d happily see him given a go there, but there will be a reason he hasn’t been - I know Howe likes inverted wingers

 

edit: it would be great if he did work out there - he’s clearly a better footballer than Almiron or Murphy

Like with most players, especially at our level, you have to take the good with the bad. Very few teams will have the perfect player for their position.

 

If he had the press-resistance and ball-playing ability of someone like Bruno for example he’d be the best cm in the league. As for now, he’s got a lot of useful attributes to work with.

I cant get my head round this. 

 

Plays in a top 7 prem team which finished 4th the season before. 

Plays international football for Brazil.

 

Something tells me he is more than just a "good" prem midfielder.

Exactly. And if Bruno had Joelinton’s height and running power, then he’d be the best midfielder in the world. It’s all about picking players that complement each other, make up for individual deficiencies and work as a team.

just watched the full 90 minutes and really the three times he got caught with the ball all came in the last 25 minutes where he was visibly and understandably a bit knackered. He was pretty immaculate with the ball before that.

 

I think he’s still got some fitness work to do.
