For me, he's alongside Longstaff in the pecking order, it would be a coin toss over which one I'd start. That's quite damning on Willock though as I think he has a lot more ability, he just rarely uses it effectively nowadays. 

 

I thought he was "okay" today having said that. Just a bit frustrating as usual and wasteful, but at least he was trying to get us up the pitch.

He's had limited game time and hasn't had a really good game (Birmingham aside) so naturally some people have decided he's been terrible and that he's finished.

I don't think people have just 'decided he's been terrible' without merit. We have observed him putting in terrible performances with the opportunities he's been afforded - so the comments are warranted in questioning his role in the team. Longstaff's role is understandably under question too and he's certainly been no worse than Willock, probably better.

He's had really bad injuries for a player with his style of play (quick runs when the side are on transition with or without the ball) bad hamstrings and in particular his achilles injuries mean he's not the same player. Also his best performances under Howe came when he was used in a certain way in conjunction with Joelinton and because we've changed the personnel we've tweaked how we play a little that's unlikely to happen much in future. I was a big advocate of giving him a try on the right hand side when Murphy couldn't get going at the start of the season but he's not going to displace him or Barnes there now. Wanted it to happen for the lad but he needs to start producing when given opportunities which hopefully he will be with Gordon's suspension. Last orders at the last chance saloon for little Joe or he's on the shift him in the summer list as far as i'm concerned.

He always had poor end product but his energy, work rate and ball carrying suggested if he could add it to his game he would be a huge asset. But he hasn’t and I guess he can’t - if anyone could’ve improved him it would’ve been EH but there has been no improvement.
 

I don’t think he’s any worse than he was before, he’s probably just the same but because we’ve seen it for years now, it’s more frustrating.

Subjectively terrible yes. I'd say those opinions are way over the top though, as is so often the case due to the short-termist outlook on here.

Career defining even. I doubt he'll miss a chance that easy again. I feel for the lad and he's had his moments for us but he looks shot of all confidence now. We won't get any decent money for him though so here he'll stay.

Terrible is a word we use to describe something that's particularly bad. It appears that most people watching Newcastle, with the best will for Willock to improve have concluded that he's been particularly bad in enough occasions, over a long enough period of time to draw a conclusion. I'm not sure how it's 'short-termist'. Other than Birmingham he's barely contributed anything significantly positive to our play and has more often than not been a hindrance. I think it's fair.

I can’t find it but someone else may have seen it, where players are being interviewed about who’d be most likely to get a fine for being late as an example, I’m sure little Joe was mentioned a few times. Could it be that he’s not putting in the work off the field?

Since his most recent injury he's started 4 matches. Birmingham away, Man City away, Forest home, Liverpool away. A tough set of matches, but 2 goals vs Birmingham, an assist vs Forest, and by no means someone to single out for blame vs Man City and Liverpool.

 

Find it mad how quickly folk will turn on our players like. If they don't immediately perform after coming back from injury they're on the chopping block with some

I know you're trying to apply logic and reason here, but we're talking about an online fanbase that I'm criticising in part for its lack of either. It's short-termist to write off a player not being at their best despite only having started a few times, plenty of other players looking worse, and the abundance of pie still being wiped from faces from previous occasions of hastily writing players off. Just my opinion.
