He can be happy with the Villa performance because we ONE chance, so we did well there. Against West Ham it wasn't our fault, because the referee gave them a penalty. It's never about trying harder no matter what, as long as there is literally one positive (or at least an excuse), he's happy. Worst part is that it seems to affect some of the players as well.
