Yeah, I thought the same. Having a dig at Keegan for daring to come runners up to Man Utd.

I love Keegan, he’s given me some of the best days of my entire life.

But he fucked up in 95/96. Throwing away what should have been a massive and unassailable lead at Xmas isn’t “daring to come runners up to Man Utd”.

You can love someone whilst also accepting their glaringly obvious faults.

He’s a legend and deserves respect.

Today was really poor but he will be more aware of that than anyone else. He’s earned our support, trust and credit. Maybe some stage in the future there has to be a difficult conversation but it’s a long way from now.

He’s made some poor decisions transfer and tactics wise this season but I back him to turn it around and I think we owe it to him as a fan base to give him time to do so. He’s the man.

Whatever you think of KK, the 4-4-2 of his side, and that of Ferguson were a joy to watch.

That's gone from football, it's low block, one up top, inverted this and that. 6, 8 10's. Pep boring the shite out of football.

What's wrong with going back to simple old football, it was better to watch that's for sure.

Unless he said it elsewhere didn't he say he needs to work better rather than harder as he already works as hard as he can?

If Freddie Fletcher was still alive I reckon he'd be humble about it but point to the revenue streams he produced. That's not underplaying Keegan's role in us being the hot ticket etc, I just mean it was a joint thing, we had a straight shoot at it as well.

The competitiveness that I remember was pure spectacle at the start of the season imo, even as a kid I knew it was Man United and then everyone else. It was us, Blackburn, Liverpool competing imo, I never thought Arsenal or Villa, or Leeds, or Boro would win the league, regardless of what they spent.

Whereas now those top few are set in stone and even when it isn't, the top dogs can spend and fail and spend and fail again and again.

At the start of the PL era they all started ahead of us, way ahead for all bar Boro, so that suggests an achievement in itself to bypass them.

He's remembered for orchestrating one of the most entertaining sides ever seen at the top level. One that's still talked about today. Tbh the only side I can recall that is still talked about so widely when they didn't win anything.

We don't need to talk Keegan down to talk Howe up. That said I do think Howe has eclipsed him cos of what KI said. We can't outspend almost everyone in the league anymore. But Keegan was immense.

Mention 95/96 to any non-Man United fan that experienced it and they'll talk about that Newcastle side before nigh on anything else. I knew people who didn't even like football at all who watched our matches. You couldn't get Odeon tickets to watch us, let alone match tickets.

That's not a cope or anything, I'd rather we won the league  and it's not a brag either, you hear it time and again, with no Newcastle influence involved at all.

BUT, being real, when i watch it back, although I think Keegan's football comparitive to the era it was in wins, if you just look at it 1 v 1,  Howe's football is better like.

“I’ve got to do more” was one of the things he said

"There's a harsh reality for me. I think I have to think long and hard about - not my effort, because I can't question that - but I have to work better, do more. I have to take responsibility for everything you see on the pitch. I have got to work out solutions.

"I also of course have to ask the same of the players. I have to ask them to be really honest and look at their best levels, and judge them against that now in this current moment.

"I don't think there are too many who can say they are playing their best. That then gives us growth to improve.

He's defo not saying he needs to work harder, but that he needs to be better, which is right and is a great soundbite. I've seen nothing this season to suggest that is likely, but I love the sentiment.

My ideal scenario is Eddie turns it around, we have a great end to the season and I look like a massive wanker for ever doubting him, that is feeling less and less likely though.

Heartbreaking this. Genuinely heartbreaking.

Oof. That's quite grim, tbh. Have a day off, Eddie. Get down to Tynemouth. Lovely stroll on the beach. Fish n' chips. Crack on on Monday.

Work better

Do more

Take responsibility for everything

Work out solutions

Work it harder, make it better

Do it faster, makes us stronger

More than ever, hour after hour

Sorry bud but calling it how it is. Keegan is the heart and soul of NUFC in the last like 40 years of existence, but ask anyone outside of that...he's a try hard and a Geordie love symbol.

Sorry guys but the truth hurts.

Folk remember winners not runners up. The engraving on the trophy further emphasises so.

And I am not denying that.

However, if you ask most football fans what they thought of Keegan they will remember "I will love it if we beat them" and the throwing a title.

Keegan is undoubtedly a God to Newcastle fans and rightly so.

Anyone criticising Keegan can give their heads a wobble. He inspired so many people. He’s the reason I support Newcastle, he’s the reason I started playing football. He’s now the reason my son supports Newcastle, he’s the reason my son plays football.

Each to their own but to me, he'll always be the man that turned this club from being a second division also ran on their way to the third with a half empty stadium into one of the biggest in Europe playing the best football I've seen in a black and white shirt and going close to winning the title playing that way.

And to me.

The point is being missed. What we think as NUFC fans...I.e. (Keegan is a God like being) and what everyone else sees are different.

Nowhere near enough to justify overhauling them with the headstart they all had relative to what they also spent.

excluding sales cos cant be arsed (but bare in mind Cole and Fox alone came to more than £10m)

Leeds spent £4m in 92/93, £5m 93/94, £6.7m in 94/95, 5.7 1995

Arsenal 3.6m 92/93, 1m 93/94, 8.2 94/95, 12.2 in 1995

Villa 3.2m 92/93, 3.3m 93/94, 6.9m 94/95, 10m 1995

Liverpool 4.4m 92/93, 4.7m 93/94, 9m 94/95, 13m 1995

Blackburn 7.9m 92/93, 9m 93/94, 6.8 94/95, 8m 1995

Spurs 5.7m 92/93, 4.5m 93/94, 7.8m 94/95, 8.7m 1995

Everton 1.5 92/93, 3.4, 93/94, 11.4m 94/95, 6.9m 1995

Sheffield Wed 2.3m 92/93, 7.3 93/94, 6m 94/95, 7.4m 1995

Boro 4m 92/93, 4.2 94/95 (in 2nd tier), 10m in 1995

We spent £4.7 in 92/93, £7.8 93/94, £6.1 94/95, 14m 1995

sorry to get all nerdy but have gone through this stuff for the Mag before

and obviously I'm leaving out Batty and Tino in 1996 to be a bit biased but I'll use the argument that we got to the top prior to them but that ultimately there was no blank cheque book scenario relative to other clubs and it was competive

You honestly think that Eddie will be remembered for winning the Carabao cup (outside Newcastle)?

i kind of agree that outside of Newcastle Keegan is seen more for the 'I'd love it meme' than what he acheived, which definitely hurt his legacy, but I don't think people think he wasn't a succesful manager. Levels I guess, he was a hero to us and outside this space, he was just a succesful manager, I don't think other fans don't rate him though.
