There have been instances such as Arsenal away (22/23) where they shredded our press in the first twenty. In response he switched to a midblock and comfortably saw out the game.

 

However there's also been examples such as Wolves away (23/24) where our full backs were becoming isolated v their pacey wide men and he reacted way too slowly.

 

I definitely think his in game tactics is an area he can develop and become more proactive, but I don't think it's as simple as saying he always reacts a certain way.

I think it's switching things up via subs or team shape that he doesn't tend to do unless the match state is bad enough. Blocks he does and more tactical things I don't notice I assume.

That form in 21/22 had us 4th in the form league, and this season we're only 3 points behind where we were at this stage in 22/23 when we were 4th and finished 4th. 

 

If you think we should be doing better than the position we're in because of the extra signings we made in the meantime and because Howe set a rod for his own back that's obviously each person's opinion. I just think it's completely daft.

 

 

 

I didn’t mean it as an attack on Howe - it is a curio more than anything.

 

I do think it is more suggestive that he did an incredible job in 21/22, and he’s doing a good job this season.

Just watched Eddies Post match press conference and his first words were "I thought we played ok tonight - I thought we played pretty well"

Obviously not my debate to be sticking my two penneth worth in but not all variables have stayed the same while we may no longer be punching above our weight other teams have signed players/changed managers so what we are doing now is in a much harder landscape. 

 

Coupled with that the lack of squad freshness for us and players aging out i still hope we can refresh and come again next season and take the league conundrum from a different angle the Howe style has worked but he surely knows it won't forever. 

 

Still think under the circumstances Howe is doing great the inconsistency is what worries me most we can't have a good 90 we have good spells and sometimes play like it's a completely different 11 from one half to the next never mind game to game.

Numerous times this season his lack of proactive in game management has cost us. I was at Fulham and you could see what was happening in real time and he refused to change it up until they scored. 

He brought Pope back in and he's let him down big time last night and that first goal against Nottingham Forest and i don't think he's going to get better going forward. 

 

Still absolutely love him mind but he's not infallible. 

 

Fulham was rince and repeat of Brighton at home, you could see the game changing and Brighton scoring and we did nowt

Was at Anfield last night. Noticed how much we rely on patterns of play with Howe, 2 and 3 players working in units to manipulate space.

Joelinton is probably the most pivotal player and consistently involved in those units.  Left back and left wing. CD and CM. CM and Attack.

 

Last nights change in tactics, broke so many of those familiar patterns and we just looked disconnected and unbalanced. They on the other hand looked devastating and so well drilled on the break - it was fluid and telepathic. 

Our one devastating player was injured and replaced with one of around six players I would consider past there best, or their best lower EPL standard. Our better players were poor also.
Lastly, the game was crying out for subs about 5-10 minutes before their second goal, but again we waited til the goal to react - that's on Howe, again. It seems to happen every week lately.
