That's on the club. All three alternatives were injured in January and we chose not to do anything.

There's plenty that Howe is culpable for IMO but having to select Trippier is not one of them.

Yeah I agree, but I'd like to hear what he thinks about it

So what's your excuse for us being shit in August and September then?

It has to be said, the reason the fixtures are so punishing at the moment is that we also had a shitload of straightforward ones back-to-back and have mostly looked crap in those too

Over the full 90 ? I’d say none, actually maybe Everton away ?

We were even a bit shakey in that game until Pickford threw in the second, was plain sailing from there though.

Do we think we will get a top manager in if Eddie goes? If its not an absolute winner of an appointment I don't know that it works.

Glasner and Maresca seem like the type we would end up with and I think they are both huge risks of being a bust.

What does a bust look like though? Because if it's finishing lower-mid-table then there's every chance that's where we're going to end up this season.

If we're finishing 8th or above then yeah you have to say we'd need a top appointment to do better than that with the group we have, but we're 12th and that gap to 7th/8th is getting wider not tighter.

Next time we’re in 4 comps, he needs to pick two to concentrate on and play kids/fringe players in the others.

It’ll help develop players too.

Won't have to worry about that next season at least anyway.

Howe has been here since 2021. In word and action he hasn't IMO really ever shown a commitment to football that relies on being better physically than the opposition and showing more intensity.

Even when he's had a clean bill of health and enough players to work towards it (if not the perfect squad - which we will never realistically have with our resources/the lopsided PSR deck).

The way I see it, I think we can continue to be a good cup team under Howe (probably more competitive in seasons with less demanding European fixtures) but I don't think his philosophy is well suited for competing at the top end of the league and in multiple cup competitions.

I don't think it's coincidence the injury situation is what it is with another CL campaign. He squeezes every last drop out of them.

Different fans/owners will have varying levels of expectation and ambition. Unless there is a better manager out there who wants to be at Newcastle, competing for cups every now and again is alright with me.

I'm still here. No one better available AFAIK.

Eddie's secret sauce of "playing with intensity" is, sadly, easily replicable and has a very low barrier to entry.

He can't run a CL European campaign alongside three domestic competitions. He'll run the squad into the ground every single time.

Hopefully next year we'll be competitive in cups.

33 points, with a 10 point gap and 13 games to go isn't a relegation battle.

Well, probably not. But only by dint of the fact the bottom three are fucking atrocious. We need to pick up points.

He certainly needs to rotate more but he also needs to get a tune from all his signings. He’s wasted some money from the summer

The league cup was an obvious one to rest players. Tbf the fa cup draws have been brutal.

Emery and Howe accepted when we were bottom of the table.  Don’t see why we’re less attractive today.

You are not wrong. Benitez chose us when we were far worse.

However lots has also changed. Howe wasn't a top level appointment ans Emery turned us down, not convinced by the project.

Back then PSR didn't crush all hope, owners were vocal and unquestioned in their support of the project. Everything was positive.

Ultimately the project is still an easy sell if sold right. It's more about which top managers are out there and a right fit vs other top 6 sides also being in the market for a top manager.

4 out of the "big 6" could replace their manager this summer.

Im just a bit out of touch with who out there would be considered a top level, huge step up appointment. That will be needed to convince players to come in the summer and more importantly stay.

Emery accepted and then freaked out at Staveley’s constant briefing of the press

This.

1000 times this.

I find these reactions absolutely baffling.

Think it's fairly obvious our squad just can't cope with this amount of fixtures.

We did better in the 23/24 season with a thinner squad and a lot more injures.

Put Murphy in at Villa and play Elanga in the important games? It’s hardly rocket science.

I wouldn't have, but i wouldn't have played 4-3-3 though.  4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1. With at least one player shielding the defence, and i know this is not going to happen, but we need a proper 6 (it's 4 imo as i'm old).

Yes; this does seem to be forgotten. We had a horrific run of about ten games when we fell to pieces but otherwise looked good that season.

edit; the CL matches we faced were also much harder.

Nobody better than a 35 year old Trippier. Not buying that
