If anyone will know it's Speakman.

Jude was the definition of precocious and didn't look or play like a teenager. His brother isn't in the same category and only managed 600 minutes last year in dribs and drabs. I don't imagine Sunderland can afford to throw that kind of money away, but he also doesn't look like a player that's going to come into the team this season and make a difference.

A quick Dennis Wise scouting mission suggests he's a midfielder that connects defence and attack. Given they did some of their best stuff on the counter I can see why they want someone like him.

As before, the biggest question for them is how they improve their striking options and replace Diallo.

Exciting signing for them though. Would be quite happy if we bought him for our development squad.

Do we know how much? Heard as much as £15m...that doesn't seem right. Sure Jude went for that and he was incredible for them.

Is it only exciting because of his surname ?

Looks like it's around 1.5 million and incentivised up to 3M, Speakman and Dodds have been chasing him since they came through the door here. It looked nailed on the season before last as he was regularly at the SOL for games when Birmingham weren't playing, He was at Wembley aswell for the L1 final.

Looks relatively risk free, Doubt we will make a loss on him even if it doesn't work out as everyone hopes. He's a big lad for 17 mind, looks like he's bigger than Jude from the Madrid conference photos.

Much prefer this type of signing than what we would have done in previous years, bringing in someone like Jeff Hendrick on an 8 year contract.

Positive moves so far, looks like three in early doors to replace three outgoings, need to get 3 or 4 in now to impact the first team straight away.

I think your recruiting team are a lot more switched on now, they at least have a clear plan on a way forward. Night and day from what Donald and the Tory cunt in the pink strides we’re up to.

Well yes. He's come from the bellingham/brum factory and has every chance at his age to become a PL quality player. Like Teddy says, better than lumping it on a player you know is meh. At least you've got reason to be excited for a bit.

Only disappointing thing is that you inevitably lose all your good ones if they have a good season or two, Nature of the beast like.

I suppose they're looking at a sort of Brentford model in order to gain promotion. They're the only team I can think of recently who have been able to gain promotion in that way of buying young and them growing with the team with the odd big sale on the way. Like it's been said above it's a very difficult way to do it because you're constantly losing your best players and it's all about how good your recruitment is.

Aye I think thats the model they are going for but you have to have a balance and know when to retain some of your better players otherwise it's virtually impossible to just keep selling to sides in higher leagues and hope you get promoted.

If we lose Clarke this window I can't see how we give it a crack next year, It would be massive losing him and Diallo inside one window.

Slightly mitigated by having Stewart back (is he staying ?). Or at least having the summer to get a forward sorted.

Nobody knows, seems an odd one as apparently we offered him a new deal which he stalled on, then he got injured so wanted us to honour the original deal and now we are holding off to see if he's going to recover properly. Apparently Stoke have offered him 40K a week.

Were bringing in some striker from Benfica, awaiting a work permit, would think he'd be backup to Stewart if he stays.

This was always the issue we'd had with Ashley. The so-called Arsenal of the north plan, of buying young, developing well and making the odd sale is great on the face of it.

But some gambles don't work, and you're stuck with those ones. Plus, it relies on you being consistently ahead of the market both in recruitment and development, and other clubs will spot what you're doing and catch up. Then, of course, it relies on you reinvesting any big sales smartly to improve the squad long term.

So, it's alright if don't employ comical bunglers to negotiate transfers and 'develop' players, and then pocket any money that comes in from the few successes you do have.

It doesn't sound like your current owners are on the same ego trip or have the intent to use you as a golf-sale style billboard, though, so you might have a better chance.

PS, you can have Bellingham AND Hendrick if you like...

If they are going down that route, to make a success of it they need to bring in quality experience, especially in key areas like defence and mid. They need to be looking at free 30 somethings coming direct from the prem, who can guide the youth while the grow in the championship and provide higher levels of experience that the current squad doesn't have. Milivojevic & Evans (reckon both should get better offers, but why not) would be fantastic levels of experience and quality. A drop down on Evans would be kieren Clarke..who should still be good for a promotion push for at least a season or 2, then jettisoned once there.

That's how it was under Ashley. Anyone good would be sold. Anyone shit could get a testimonial.

The key to the illusion is probably young players and reinvestment. The same risks, anybody good will be sold, hung over during Ossie Ardiles reign but because they were young players it didn't seem so sterile and cold plus there was some expectancy it would be reinvested in the club not disappear into some fat c*nts portfolio of scams businesses

You know you're going to sign him now don't you ? It's the way the football God's work.

Had Grealish kept his gob shut, Miggy has another hard working but no end result season.
