He's really not good enough, why's he punch the ball over the bar when it's a routine catch...

We’re clearly getting one tbh, so I wouldn’t worry.

Yeah, it was shambolic positioning. I reckon it is just rustiness. And usually the opponent doesn't nail it right in the opposite corner like that, so you get away with it.

He was absolutely fine after that.

His kicking was absolutely dreadful. He gave the ball straight to their player in the first half under no pressure

yeah, honestly when you are under pressure and don’t have confidence that you can pass the ball back to your keeper it’s not helpful. Also think Pope puts the crowd on edge which really doesn’t help.

Hope Trafford is good

There was a camera angle that showed that really well, he was aiming for a midfielder (Can't remember who), and it honestly went about 10 yards wide of the target, it wasn't like MGW was tightly marking someone.

Evident a couple of times in the second half and we loaded the right hand side and he hooked it left

I do wonder how kids get through academy stages of football without an ability to kick a ball. He’s represented his country ffs [emoji38]

He had a couple of bad kicks, yeah. But his kicking wasn't absolutely dreadful taken across the whole game. Outside of one or two bad kicks, the rest were absolutely fine.

It brings uneccessary anxiety to the crowd and defence as he can't kick the ball in a straight line.

If Dubravka had played like Pope did today with his kicks and position on the first goal you'd have been calling him worse than shit

So he did it once then?  And that's atrocious is it?

I don't see the need for your strawman here. Dubravka kicks better than Pope, yes. Pope's kicking has always been a weakness and he made two awful kicks today, maybe another that I'm missing. Pope also dropped a complete howler to let them score. But, Pope did everything else that was asked of him today and is a much better player than Dubravka. He is a much stronger shot stopper, he sweeps behind the defence better and is far more dominant on crosses. He is also a confident and calm head who communicates with clarity to the defence - you could see that in the game this afternoon. So I understand entirely why Howe has made the call to bring his number 1 back in and I don't want a kneejerk regression back to Dubravka.

I want Pope in for the rest of the season and I want an upgrade in the summer. Dubravka is a less than ideal back-up, but clearly must have the right mentality to do that job for us and I imagine PSR also keeps him at the club.

He couldn't kick the ball anywhere near our players from goal kicks. And he was lucky to get away with that one in the first half.

I'm not saying anything revelationary here, his kicking is appalling

I'm sorry like but you've been slagging off Dubravka constantly for ages on here and you absolutely would not have said Dubravka was 'fine' if he put in the performance Pope did today.

I think the defence and crowd have more confidence in Dubravka's kicking than Pope. It's a huge issue for us

You're obsessed with goalkeepers playing great passes.  Call me old fashioned but I love a goalkeeper. The clue is in the name, GOALKEEPER.

I said it before the game and I'll repeat it now, Pope is clearly the better keeper, better shot stopper, better sweeper, better at crosses and better at commanding his box. I think it's fair to say that first goal can be put down to rustiness as the rest of the game can attest. The only thing Dubz is better at is his distribution under pressure.

Pope is the best option we have this season, but we do need a new No.1 for next season.

For about 16 months Pope was mostly exceptional for us, but this season he's been a deadly mix of brilliant, shaky and injured. It's absolutely the time to upgrade - and clearly they knew this in the summer. With Dubs staying I'd happily see us move him on, with the very best wishes.

It was a huge call to put him back in because you really, really can't be flaky with your keeper selection. You've got to pick your number one and back him, unless it's abundantly clear he shouldn't be in the side. Not really sure why Dubs deserved to be dropped tbh.

Feels like we're in the same position as we were last season now, with a potentially pivotal flaw in such a crucial position. Hopefully Pope plays his way into form.
