They can't afford him unless they manage to shift the players they need to (primarily Nunez) and grind us down on the price. This is the reason we are seeing this bullshit play out now through the player/agent/media rather than just making bids. Whole thing stinks.

Actually, they can afford us but they dont need to rush, they can let us sweat.

They are arrogant as fuck, they think they are in driving seat with the player only wanting them. This whole little stunt they've pulled between them (Liverpool and Isak) is blatant as fuck.

Isak knows we Value him at atleast 150. Liverpool aren't willing to pay that much so they came up with this little play to drive the price down.

I mean look at the timing of the wants to leave bullshit, left them with an absolute free run.

This is more Beardsley/Waddle/Gascoigne than Cole (for me)

Cole was sold to better the club and we did - Ferdinand was a betterr player (even scored more goals in 94/95 and both his seasons with us than Cole did at the same time if it comes down to goals), Shearer was better than both of them, the team did improve.

I know we'll reinvest but because the regulations I don't see any moving forward possible. Nothing to do with the club.

I started going in time to fully experienced 88-92, officially the clubs worst days, never considered not going but if these rules had been in place then that would be different. Its not about us being rubbish its about being legislated against being at the top. You hoped it would be transient at the top even if you couldn't be there yourself. There is no hope for that now and feels a bit of a mugs game, especially for us, VIlla and Forest having experienced it first hand, others will one day realise the same but the upward mobility until that point will help obfuscate it

Winter speaking some sense here.

Would agree with everything other than Newcastle have good comms people. I don't think that is the case.

Can't argue with anything other than the comms bit.

Liverpool must be punished when it comes to the fee for the way they've approached this. No ifs or buts. They must pay MUCH higher than anyone else would have to for Isak. And if they won't pay it, then tough shit Alex.

Anyways, we can't sell to Liverpool under any circumstances and this should be the bottom line.

They've engineered this and we shouldn't be rewarding them unsettling our players in consecutive summers.  Just rolling over for them would be a level of pathetic ness I thought we had seen the back of.

I dont get this assumption at all

The same media figures are just tweeting about it daily with exactly the same statement on a situation that hasn't changed? Highly, highly doubtful when they otherwise don't do that.

Aye, in hindsight it looks more and more like this has been a deliberate strategy which has been on the cards for a while. The timing of it in particular suggests premeditation on the part of Liverpool and those representing Isak. I'd be interested to know exactly how long that relationship has been established.

Yeah I am absolutely dreading any kind of "deal agreed for £120/£130m" I think we would be absolutely robbed for that.

The whole narrative going into this summer was that we hold all the power and that if would take a huge bid north of £150m atleast to get to the table and even then was unlikely.

I hate that just because he is asking to leave suddenly we would be expected to bend over and take what we can get.

Nah as others said I don't get how much power the player now has, if he wants to play, in a world cup year, he gets his head down and still plays. Whether we see a slight drop off in performance or not it would be worth it we were gonna get screwed on the fee anyway.

Teams would still pay £120m next summer even if he spent the year sulking and not playing to his best.

Getting angry at Isak is letting the club off the hook for their responsibility is all of this.

They knew that Isak was rising to a level where his existing contract vastly underrepresented his value. That is why - supposedly - we had agreed to discuss a new deal with him last summer. We then abruptly changed course and never went any further with negotiations.

Crucially, we didn't seem to discuss this with our star asset. We just sort of thought it would all work out on its own, I guess. Turns out it didn't. Isak is rightly annoyed that we didn't honor our gentleman's agreement and also has likely not failed to notice that we are struggling to get things done in the transfer market.

We could have given him a better deal proactively. We could have put together a plan for his eventual departure. We could have done so much more than we actually have done.

PSR doesn't account for poor planning and nonexistent leadership. PSR doesn't excuse the inability to plan for deals more effectively and to complete them quickly - or at all. PSR doesn't make it OK to leave so many crucial positions in the club hierarchy unfilled for so long, eliminating any kind of long-term plan or.flow.

We are going to have Howe jumping off the project if we're not careful. They're asking him to work more miracles with a thin squad who are likely asking a lot of tough questions right about now.

Back to Isak, though - the club is counting on people to see him as the villain to avoid the scrutiny about their mismanagement of all of this. Don't let them off the hook.

I think very few people are not angry with the club for how they've handled this situation and the transfer window as a whole.

I Repeat, nobody wants to hold him back or stop his career.

The reason he's a cunt is the way he's engineered this deal to make sure the price is as low for Liverpool as possible. players leave all the time but most of them act like professionals and handle the transfer with decorum and don't throw the toys out of the pram.
