Part of the problem is that clubs can only project a portion of their income - ST sales are locked in; commercial deals are usually clear; basic TV rights are confirmed in advance of the season.

Much of the income of football-club is performance-based, and no matter how much is spent there is no guarantees offered on that front (see United, Manchester).  Prize money for league position; money for TV appearances (less likely if you’re mediocre); advancing in Europe and the domestic cups.

The sport isn’t set up well for clubs to be able to confidently project future income and use those projections to determine how much they can spend.  Underperforming on the pitch is traditionally punished in the usual sporting way - failure, relegation etc.  These rules double-down on failure.  Owners who are already risk-averse just become even more risk-averse - resulting in increasingly turgid ‘product’.

None of that matters, though.  The bottom line is what counts.

Isn’t modern football fun?

This is relatively small for the big 6. It impacts clubs like us more as a overall %. Our revenues are 300mish. Man U's is 800mish no? The competition money has a much bigger impact for us or Villa than it does Man U.

Leicester are going to get a PL points deduction, get relegated, get a Championship points deduction. Spend the next 5 years trying to get in and stay in the PL and lose most of the brand value they accumulated by winning the PL & FA Cup. And it's just because of FFP - their Owners are happy to finance Leicester.

The game would never let this happen to a Cartel club.

Getting relegated twice and being reduced from midtable/top half club with ambition to at least maintain that to yo-yo club status - a scenario infinitely more of a financial risk than if they were left alone - for spending what they could afford to.Would hate to think what punishment a club trying to form a new league and change and damage the dynamic of football in this country would get if ever such a thing happened.

Think he’s hired the bloke who used to do the ISIS recruitment videos for editing 😂

Great to see that we’re being taken seriously though, it’s outrageous the quality we have in this team

now tbh.

What a weird video.

NOT weird at all, watch it and you will see.

Turned off after about 15 seconds.

This is a VERY high quality analysis of our football club, of the depth and quality that you never see on Sky Sports or any other London Channel.

I was thinking recently how much sense it would make for the PL (and likely all leagues) to change their reporting period to calendar year to match UEFA. It would provide consistency, but I think it also removes some of the uncertainty. As you said, performance determines a lot. TCD is also right that it impacts the likes of us and Villa more than those making double what we bring it, but it can still be meaningful.

On December 1 we were in 10th. That's about £15m in prize money from where we are today. That plus the benefits of advancing deeper into Europe can be significant.

Calendar year would allow clubs to have almost all the information they need for the entire summer transfer window and remove the June scramble. It would probably make January even more difficult to conduct business, but otherwise seems very sensible. I won't hold my breath.

They could just scrap the January transfer window as part of such a move. Would be more fair anyway.

Agreed it makes too much sense that it won’t happen.
