I wasn't born until 1978 and didn't start going until the final game of that season (Keegans farewell v Liverpool) but heard plenty of stories about when Chelsea would visit back in the day. Apparently a few of our fans were slashed by some of their lost in the Farmers Rest. Think of all the London clubs Chelsea would bring the biggest away following.

Scousers sounded loud as fuck on the telly like. We need more young lads in. That ageing demographic is hitting us hard amongst other things.

Atmosphere sounded shite on the TV. I started watching Arsenal v Man U after our match finished and so many areas of the ground were standing.

They sang for about 5 minutes in total. Zero noise first half, only sing when they scored. Our away fans make way more noise.

Need another singing section in the ground or just people to relax and sing even if the opposition have the ball.

Listened to radio newcastle ground sounded good, but on tv it sounded shit, thought it might have been Amazon’s shite sound set up, but then put Arsenal on and it sounded loud.

St James’ just has a morgue feel about it at times, sooner where in a new stadium the better. Everybody sitting just looks shit compared to Emirates where large swathes we’re standing up.

Never thought I’d see the day when the Emirates was louder and more raucous than SJP.

A few times I thought we'd won a call but it was just their fans like. Definitely louder than normal.

I got accused of being a Liverpool fan by a guy who was absolutely off his tits.

I think middle of the Leazes is the most irritating area of the ground, worse than the East Stand even. All the whinging but none of the silence

Overall atmosphere was class though.

Thought Leazes East Corner was decent tonight.

Overall, think it was an improvement to West Ham, felt the presence of everyone tonight.

Nah, I was watching it on Amazon and they must have had the microphones placed in L7 because at times it was like Liverpool were the home team. I don't like saying it just being honest.

Not in the first half. Think their supporters busses must have broken down and arrived on 50 minutes. Because before then I heard fuck all from them.

A huge new stadium would hopefully allow a new younger generation to get into the ground. That's the demographic which made St James a bear pit in the past.

Can those “fans” who watched the game on the telly or listened on the radio stop bleating on about how bad the atmosphere was?

Why?

SJP sounds completely different depending on where you're sitting. I thought the Liverpool fans were probably the loudest away crowd this season, but I was sitting in the Leazes.

They were very loud but only for short periods. There have been better away fans who made noise though the game.

Perhaps because they weren’t there?

So fuck. If you could only hear the Liverpool fans on the telly that's cos there's a good chance our fans were shit. Which on the main they were.

No need to be defensive. I've attended hundreds of matches. When I'm there I sing more than most. Even the commentators were on about how loud the Liverpool fans were. It is what it is.

I thought both sets of fans did well.

The bar is obviously different when you're comparing away and home fans. Away fans are self-selecting for the hardcore, especially on a weeknight in Newcastle, they're bound to be consistently louder than the home crowd.

Amazon’s sound levels are appalling. All four games I’ve watched for a bit have had the same muffled/subdued aura. I get they’re probably using comms in a studio but even then there’s not need to dampen the crowd noise that much.

It was noticeable from before kick off that the atmosphere was going to better than West Ham (I was sitting roughly same place for both). It's disappointing how much our fans fold though when we conceded. Liverpool were loud at the beginning and after their goals but were also quiet and noticeably nervous a lot of the time too (fair enough).

You know it's weird, I watched it on my phone and the Liverpool fans sounded deafening at times I kid you not, that's why I've been going on about it yet we sounded all muffled and distant. Maybe it's Amazons fault? Who knows.
