NUFC Transfer Rumours

We either low balled on purpose knowing it would never be accepted or some unknown reason.

You mention grandstanding, it reflects well on both clubs as we look liked we submitted a bid and Palace come off looking good too that they rejected the bid; both sets of fans are appeased.

We have an excellent scouting team. They could not have a better track record since the takeover so I don't doubt for one minute that they hadn't identified numerous players we could have bought in the last two years to improve the team.

Or using the principle of Occam’s razor, we likely made several bids resulting in a take it or leave it offer and Parish attempted to use it to flush out other higher offers from the likes of Liverpool who were rumoured to be interested too. Not everything is a grand conspiracy FFS

It would have been fascinating to see how a successful Guehi bid would have turned out since the club have (hopefully deliberately) put out mixed messages about our transfer activity in the last year. The club have unofficially said there’s no money but Howe has contradicted that on a few occasions in the last two windows.

I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to think he’s basically issuing something of an ultimatum in the way he’s been speaking recently. He’s been very matter of fact in a way he never is over transfers. The money is there, we need players and we need them quickly. There’s no excuses at all from the higher ups this summer and he wants us all to know it.

So we both agree that we had no money due to PSR?

How could we buy a player knowing we'd have to sell a significant player before the PSR deadline the following summer? The player we earmarked to sell could easily have been injured or out of form to command a decent fee. I don't for one minute suspect Howe would agree to go through what we did last year and the turmoil it caused within the call when we had to sell; you could argue Gordon hasn't been the same since then.

Or maybe we had enough to pay £45-50M for Guehi, but not the £60M+ Parish was pushing for, also understanding that we were likely to move on the likes of Miggy etc over the course of the next 12 months.

Anybody not directly connected to the club has a fucking clue what is going on with our financials, until the accounts are published after the fact.

Yes, we do agree on that.

As I said, I imagine we were doing it reluctantly, but Eddie obviously decided that was something we had to do to mitigate the risk of someone like Kraft (as well as he did when called upon) potentially having to be first choice CB for months.

Also, given we’d have had a year to sell to recoup the outlay, I doubt we identified one particular player as ‘the one’ that would be sold. A lot can change in a year, for example, selling Gordon a year ago seemed hugely unpalatable, and whilst I still wouldn’t want it to happen, it doesn’t seem as unrealistic as it did then.

Basically, I just can’t get on board with the idea that the whole Guehi saga was actually a mass cloak and dagger ruse, that both clubs were in on, in order to create a certain narrative with both sets of fans.

If this is whats happening, I can't understand why the club are dragging their feet to spend? I understand the last few windows being poor due to our previous over-spending.

I just can't understand why Eddie would have to play mind games in the press.

Gordon linked to Liverpool again.

I wouldn't be against it for 80 million , he clearly wanted to join them last summer and we will never know if it contributed to him having a poorer season than the one before but I think it did . I would be confident we could improve the squad with that money and if we do have to sell a purple eventually then he is the most disposable.

You don't let a take it or leave it offer run to the last few days of the transfer window. The "leave it" part means you leave it to move on to your next target.

It's not that much of a grand conspiracy, there's not many moving parts. Two clubs, one player.

Admittedly Howe was talking before Mitchell was announced as leaving so things might be completely different now. It’s definitely out of character though which he has always been very careful about.

At any point did Newcastle publicaly state anything during that period? By all accounts it was a case of they wanted Guehi but only up to a certain price and the alternative targets suggested by Mitchell, such as Todibo were dismissed as not suitable. That was a shit situation to be in, but trying to mind read anything else from it, is pure guesswork on your behalf.

For the right price, fine. Big money can help remodel the whole squad. Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton and Isak I’d be broken selling; Gordon less so.

If someone offers us big money for him I think we should take it too, on his day he's fantastic but all too often he has had long periods of looking disinterested and wasteful.

Also Barnes is now as, if not more, effective than him on the left, and we have decent cover there in Joelinton and Willock.

Can someone in the know on PSR help me out? Does it effectively mean that you have to sign players with a view to reselling at a profit? Or would there be a way to sign an expensive older player who would end their career with you without it being financially ruinous?

A system that means you can't buy players older than about 25 seems very bad for clubs and players.
