Luke Edwards - NUFC cant sign a player due to FFP, but want a PL experienced 22 year old for 40m+

OK buddy.

He does say we can’t afford to buy him now so want a loan and pay in the summer

His demands have not been met and the club are continuing to negotiate with the player and remain confident a compromise can be reached.

Hope making Edwards look reasonable somehow.

To be frank, if we knew we were sailing so close to FFP spending so much on Tonali was a bit mad

Signing a 23-year-old with 100+ appearances in Serie A and 25+ in the CL wasn't a bit mad tbf. It was widely reported that he was our #1 target for CM - an area most of us felt needed at least a couple of additions.

Our budget was clearly extremely limited, spinning 60m on a CM was a poor decision given the amount of other areas we evidently needed to strengthen and didn’t.

Im aware of his record and his ability’s but could we afford him?

What do you think an upgrade at RW would have cost exactly?

How much was Diaby and Kudus?

Diaby was on a similar fee to Tonali and reportedly significantly higher wages

Kudus, was over £40 million with add ons and given the league he signed from represented a significant risk. Reported wages In line if not higher than our biggest earners too.

I don't think either would've saved us any money, lets be honest it's not that we couldnt afford Tonali. Its that we couldn't afford to have him banned for 10 months.

Hindsight doing some heavy lifting there.

Before the summer the consensus was that we needed a quality CM. There was some disquiet last January when we let Shelvey go and didn't replace him. You can't turn round now and say "Oh well we shouldn't have bought a CM" when the main debate in the summer was whether we should have signed two rather than one.

We should have definitely got a midfielder in the summer, nmecha went for how much? The point im making is we knew we were close to FFP and we knew we needed a bigger squad and yet we went and bought the most expensive midfielder we possibly could.

Maybe we needed to be more prudent and conservative.

The bottom line is, this season isn’t panning out as anyone had hoped so it’s important we understand where we’ve gone wrong and learn for next time. Different opinions should be welcomed.

Diaby didn’t go for 65m.

also, we have scouts for a reason

We also didn't sign Tonali for £65M so what's your point? You're using the fee in Euro's which works out somewhere between £50-55M so close to Diaby's fee. And yes we do have scout's who didnt fancy either Diaby or Kudus at the fee's mentioned.

Pretty sure other players were sold for lesser fees that could have improved us. I’m not the scout.

Im saying strategically putting all of your FFP eggs in one basket is risky.

With Hope's sensationalism, I think it's worth remembering that it's been a very slow month compared to other transfer windows. Probably increasing the need, from a tabloid's pov, for incendiary clickbait.

I've said similar recently.

It was a lot of money. A LOT.

It seems like we went far into quality and "proven" pedigree rather than quantity and less proven. And it just hasn't worked out this season.

Most people wanted a first-choice LB, backup RB, 2 CMs & a right winger (and a replacement for first team departures). We signed 1 CM, the backup RB and a backup LB (and a replacement for a departure). All expensive premium options.

Would people have accepted 2 lower quality players over Tonali in July? I don't think many tbf.

The same Luke Edwards that banged the drum we were after Calvert Lewin and Jack Harrison, I'd take this with a pinch of salt.

We made numerous bids for Harrison
