This is the key issue. In hindsight, the Barnes deal was bad because of this issue. We won’t make our money back. Deals for Bruno, Isak, Gordon, Tonali, Botman, Hall and Livramento all worked out great. That’s the blueprint. I don’t think we’ll spend more than £20m on anyone over 25, it just doesn’t make sense. A winger and a CB both under 23 in the summer.

You don’t need to get your actual money back for a £50m player.  If you sign a £50m player when he’s 25 on a five year deal, his fee is amortised to £10m per season.  Sign a two year contract extension after three years and his amortised fee goes to £4m per season with £30m already amortised.  So if you sell him a year after this, then there is only £16m left to amortise - in which case, if you sell him for £17m at 29 the you make £1m ‘profit’.

I’m not fussed about Tomori. Wasn’t liked at all for England, no clubs have really made a move until spurs in their desperate situation. Had that one season peak at AC Milan. Likely an alright player, but not someone to lose sleep over when looking for a long term RCB.
