NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

With all that said about DCL, our transfers are generally opportunistic - it's been the main characteristic of most of them and good value often seems to be prioritised above the gaps in the squad.

So if they think they can get Delap for £30M or whatever then I could see it happening. They'll be worried about Isak playing 3 games a week so would see Delap as a genuine rotation option. Obviously getting him ahead of Man Utd etc would be a significant challenge.

I think if we get Delap we'll have to leave big gaps elsewhere though. If we kick the can down the road on CB, RW or GK yet again it's a fairly big risk.

for clarity here, I don't think anyone is "excited" about the prospect of signing DCL. I think we're very much aware there's a vacancy to be filled (replacing Wilson) and we can do that on a free transfer. And by signing him on a free it allows to us actually go out and sign the more expensive players in positions that are more pressing like RW, CB and GK.

it's a free transfer, it's low risk. And as the Lloyd Kelly freebie has shown; someone might come in after a few games and offer us silly money for him.

I think it's your comment about us aspiring for mediocrity because we're potentially signing a backup for nowt that's rubbed people up the wrong way. Did you think Villa were aspiring for mediocrity when they signed 30 year old Ross Barkley from a relegated Luton side just after they had qualified for the CL?

Ross Barkley was coming off a season where he performed well for Luton, injury free no less. I'd have no problems whatsoever with that type of signing on a free.

DCL is a poor to mediocre striker who's always injured having scored just 13 goals over the last 3 seasons. There upside is minimal, the downsides are practically guaranteed.

If we're serious about being a regular Top 6 outfit,  push for Delap at £30m or looking elsewhere. You're letting his 'free' tag cloud his actual worth.

DCL isn't mediocre.

What are peoples thoughts on order of priority going into the window. I think most agree that RW, CB, GK and backup striker are the main signings needed. What are peoples opinions on order of importance?

Probably the order you posted. We don't have left footed winger. If Schar or Burn get crocked next season we'll have Botman back.

Keeper priority may move up should we sell Dubravka.

Same order but would switch ST and GK.

Useful, at worst.

I’d give him that for sure. Probably considerably better at using his strength to hold the ball up if we need to.

Sooner DCL retires the better, absolute gash and the constant links are the pits. Uncreative, uninspired, not young, high wages, doesn't score, crap fashion. Rather we get Tranquillo Barnetta in.

Hard to put an order on it, they're all pretty essential with European football guaranteed.

When we're talking about a "backup" or "rotational" striker, it's worth baring in mind that in our last CL season Wilson made 25 appearances and played the equivalent of 15 games.

Whoever that is - Delap, DCL, someone else - they'll need to play a lot of minutes if we plan to be competitive domestically and in Europe.

Is DCL better than Wilson at this moment in time? I think he probably is and as a free Transfer It would be a simple one in one out.

Would rather spend a large wedge on Mbuemo, keeper and a rcb.

DCL is a decent target man. Holds the ball up well and he's great in the air, but he's absolute bobbins in front of goal. Watched a game earlier this season where he fluffed a hattrick of one v ones. Could be a confidence issue of course.

It's 'bearing'. Baring is showing your arse in Fenwick's window

Considering money is needed for GK and CB, plus Longstaff's replacement, I don't see us spending big on both RW and CF.

So if we get a £50m wide guy plus DCL, I'd be fine with that.

DCL is a name the media hacks were thrown three years ago, and they’re still running with it. Even if we were ever in for him our plans have changed so much since then that I doubt the board have thought about him in any short-medium term transfer discussions. He’s three years older now and has basically done next to nothing in those three years. He’ll be at Southampton or something next year, not here.

In an ideal world we might. But this PSR nonsense means it's far from ideal.

Any idea on how much we'll have to spend? How come Chelsea, Man Utd etc can just spend at will but even though we're one of the richest clubs in the world, we can hardly spend anything?
