The Prophet
Doesn't seem remotely like our move for Maddison. The clubs were miles apart in valuation and as far we know, the player never agreed terms.
Ikon
I don’t even think we will sign Barnes.
The Prophet
It seems pretty inevitable at this point.

It was nowt to do with valuation, we would have paid £40m but Spurs offered a higher wage and his lass probably fancied London more as well.

I was referring to the original bid in 2022. Does the above relate to Barnes?

So you think we were never in for him this summer then? It's a pity he didn't fancy joining us, as along with signing Tonali that would've been our entire midfield sorted for the next 3 or 4 seasons. Like Gascoigne joining Spurs over Man U all those years ago for extra money, I think he could regret it.

I think we were definitely interested in Maddison in some capacity, but I have no idea if we made a move. Reports have been pretty mixed on that. On the other hand the Barnes transfer seems to be a one horse race, with most reporting we've either agreed terms or we're his preferred destination. Feels more like the Gordon transfer to me. The player was keen, but it took a while to come to an agreement with Everton. Meanwhile fans tried to convince themselves we weren't in for him because they either didn't like him, didn't rate him as a player or were hoping for a sexier name. Geordie Boyo
I didn’t mind his name. The hair just never really did it for me.
prefabtoon
This Barnes thing seems club and agent led sniffing out bids. Dont think we have even considered him.
Geordie Boyo
I do think there’s something in it. We’re edging close, but nothings in concrete just yet. We’ve agreed personal terms, but we’re still way off by a few days. Maybe a week. Just keep an eye on those private jets . It might be him, but it probably isn’t. The Prophet
An agent would have more names in the mix. Leicester were almost certainly hoping for a bidding war though. Edited July 12, 2023 by The Prophet
Andy84
Seems like we’re his number one choice and wants to sign, just needs the clubs to make the deal
Guest
Just thinking about that time we signed John Barnes and he finished top goalscorer with 11 goals or something.

(6 in 26 in the league). Fucking awful time, with Rush and Pearce too.
Geordie Boyo
Peace was actually quite decent. Certainly out of the 3.
Guest
Holy shit, it was as low as 7?! Time has seriously cured all memories of those Kenny Dalglish years.

The other two were atrocious though. Yet still ‘good’ enough to be our top scorer…
Geordie Boyo
I remember he had that horrendous crash. Tough as nails. Dalglish Even signed his own son around that time. He was shit too
Guest
JD Tommasssooonn Andreas Andre And his Anderson Alan Shearer Paul Dalglish That season probably took 5 years off Shearer's life. Ah yeah, that was the season his knees retired. 17 games 2 goals.
AyeDubbleYoo
I had Barnes 10 on the back of the weird blue/green/orange away kit. Good times
Superior Acuña
Aye Pearce was decent - and went onto have a couple more years at West Ham and Man City. Must be the last time though we signed someone who'd already been a manager? Barnes half-decent. Rush was well and truly finished. His last goal in English football was with us, despite going onto player two divisions down for Wrexham.

Geordie Boyo
Hamann was class. I remember him rocketing that 30 odd yard ball in against Juve. Pearce could hit them too. spelt his name right this time
