Newcastle United Vs. Bromley - 12/01/25 @ 15:00 - Live on BBC iPlayer

Recommended Posts

Occurred to me we might try and avoid using Longstaff for cup tieing reasons if we're serious about moving him on this January. Probably won't as I'm not sure we can afford to not use him, mind.

I've said it before, but rest virtually everyone for this.

Vlachodimos (Dubravka if he's really that bad)

Trips

Schar

Kelly

Targett

Bruno/Longstaff

Miley

Willock

Miggy

Barnes

Osula

Bruno tends to do better for regular games anyhow, and can coach Miley and Osula through the game. I don't get too worried about him getting injured. Don't think I'm forgetting any other candidates.

Does being cup tied play much of a role in a buying club's decision making? I don't think it matters much, if at all. Maybe a bit of haggling over the price if they are?

Especially when - no offence to Longstaff - I don't imagine any clubs looking at him would have realistic enough cup aspirations that it would affect their transfer decision making.

Not hugely, but if we are in the vinegar strokes of a deal, whoever it is will want him available as much as possible. Plus the risk of an injury killing the deal, obviously. Which makes me question Miggy playing a bit, too, but there's not an obvious alternative there.

I don't even see the point in playing Almiron.  He has been that bad the last few appearances and is clearly no longer part of our plans.  Along with any possibility of injury.  It seems a bit of a waste.

Who would we play RW?

I'd be happy to give Sanusi a game, Murphy and Gordon should be on the bench at most.

Inclined to agree, but realistically who else? We're very reluctant to throw kids in - probably with justification, to be fair.

Isn't he miles off it? At least Sanusi has shown some promise.

I am sure it was mentioned he was impressive in some of the behind the scene Tonali friendlies in pre-season before getting injured and has been training with the first team. Likely miles off it though.

I'd play Murphy.  He regularly just plays 60 minutes.  I'm not sure we're going to change the entire XI, either.  Have Sanusi on the bench.  As he was showing glimpses in pre-season.  No idea what he's been like for the U21's since.

I get the impression there's a reason he's playing those limited minutes though. I don't think he's always been a 60 minute player. Happy if he doesn't, but I'm assuming the needs the time off too.

Saying all that, I guess Bunce will have his own contribution on who does and doesn't need time at the minute, which might mean we do things differently to normal.

Howe said Murphy was done in at half time and one of the 4 that were struggling. I think he gets a good rest unless he's absolutely needed.

Did he? I thought it was Willock, Botman and Isak? In that case rest him and play one of the kids.

Looking forward to it. Disregarding entirely that it never seems to pan out into the enjoyable and/or reaxed football fare I imagine  (Yeading, Stevenage, Cambridge - Wimbledon this season for that matter, different comp).

Think we can manage games without exertion (like some recent PL games) for a good chunk of the game if we can get it won in time so wouldn't worry about any top choices playing, though no better time to rest some and get time and sharpness into others.

Waugh said on this weeks Pod on the Tyne, that as soon as the draw was made, this weekend was penciled in to give the first 11 a rest and an extended break, and he wouldn't be surprised if there are only a handful of players that started yesterday even on the bench, with the Under 21's providing most of it backup.

Quite excited about this one to be honest, mostly because we'll get to give a run-out to the wider squad and get them a bit fitter for the busy period and that the senior players will finally get some rest.

I would go

Vlachodimos
Targett
Botman/Schar
Kelly
Tripps
Longstaff
Miley
Willock
Barnes
Sanusi
Ousula

No point in playing Almiron as he's been terrible every time he's been on the pitch, have a feeling Bruno might want to be involved in this one after missing out in Arsenal.
