I would say that even the current incarnation of Pope is a far better shot stopper/blocker than Ramsdale because of his far superior positioning, his reach and the fact that he stays on his feet rather than crumpling to the floor.

And his mistakes generally come from him being a bigger risk taker than Ramsdale who tends to be glued to his line or sometimes even behind it.

One of the best performing goalkeepers in Europe’s top 5 leagues is actually shite. Interesting.

I'm going to keep repeating the stats - this season pope 7 premiere League clean sheets in 22 games with Ramsdale 1 in 12. Extend that to all competitions this season then pope has 11 in 30 compared to Ramsdales 1 in 20.

Tldr - I agree.

Not me, it's always been pope for me as he gives us a chance by keeping more clean sheets, end of ,- 1 clean sheet every 3 games this season compared to Ramsdales one every twenty

We were conceding less chances earlier in the season when Pope was in goal.  Thats not down to Pope, but a more stable back 4 and team in general.  He had a far easier time of it and still managed to cost us several games not through an inability to save his defence, but pure blunders.  Pope in this current side isnt keeping many clean sheets, and he's liable to throw a few extra goals to the opposition.

He's got a one in three throughout his Newcastle career man and it's not even close to one in twenty. Sorry but when there's that much daylight then all of the if .. but... However... Isn't going to cut it with me.   Actually this season pope has saved an average shots per game 4.5 compared to Ramsdales 3.6

I am not sure that is the case. Despite our defensive issues (which are partly down to him) he has not actually had that many shots to save in most games. Struggling to remember him making any saves on Saturday. And he is really bad at cutting out crosses across his six yard box.

Was pushing a weak shot right back into the middle of goal and spending a week to get back up against Everton risk raking?  Was punching a floated ball anyone could easily catch right to a West Ham player for a goal risk taking?  Was being beaten at his near post from 18 yards out against Man City somehow due to risk taking?

i did say “generally”, but the Ramsdale/Pope argument seems to be as contentious as the Howe in/out one! Best just agree to disagree.

In fact throughout his whole career - 243 premiere  League games 80 clean sheets. 1 every three games consistently, imo we could do with some of that right now.

Bloke doesn’t know how to keep a clean sheet, how many has there been this season?

Playing him cos he's staying aren't we?

Probably the same with Osula.

Wouldn't improve Ossie Ardiles team either of them.

I really hope that's wrong

if you check my profile picture you will see I have fond memories of Barman Tommy who was a far better keeper!

I think Popes stats are only elevated because he played with Schar more.

He's kept those same stats throughout Burnley and everything - always one clown sheet in three, 80 from 243 premiere League games. With that consistency you just have to admit that's what you get, end of.

I laughed, and then thought ‘actually, I don’t think Ramsdale is better than Tommy Wright or Pav.  And I could name a few forwards / wingers who I’d start ahead of Osula (Quinn, Kelly, Peacock, Thompson …)’

Could he not just be having a one off season like Murphy did last season?

It’s his regular clown-esque blunders that got him dropped
