Reckon Howe brings him back into team when he's ready.  Just like with Hall, Livra and even Tonali, imagine they are trying get him more involved and physically ready for premier league.

Looks a bit better in the brief cameos.

The way Howe has treated him feels so unfair.

Team Woltemade, all the way.

The pressure on Howe is now such that I can't help but wonder if he is trying to prove the signings which he pounded the table for we're not wasted money - behind Elanga I'm genuinely not sure who those would be of the latest batch - but I'd not be surprised to see Elanga to get a lot more minutes this year.

Fine strategy as long as Eddie survives long enough.

I didn’t say he was. I said he was that sort of player.

The sort of player Berbatov was - is a highly gifted technical player that played in a laid back manner.

Without the highly gifted technical part - there’s just a laid back player.

Saw some glimpses of him playing centrally as a second striker just off Osula today when he came on, and it looked like it could have some potential if persisted with. It's pretty much the ideal position you'd want to have him playing in the Prem I think.

We are now in April, and I think it's ridiculous we haven't seen more of this setup to try something different, considering how poorly the team has played the majority of the season. Especially when you consider that Howe has used this kind of setup previously at Bournemouth, when he would play King off of Wilson in a two striker system.

At this point why not just play that way the rest of the season? Be surprised if we do though.

Aye. Let’s at least try and play some football.

I thought this was the plan from the jump. 2 up top or one behind.  And it’s basically never happened.  Not only was it not the plan, it seems to not even be any type of plan b or c.   He just spent £100m+ on strikers and wanted to rotate them.

Thats insane.

I thought he wanted to evolve the teams style a bit.  Or he needed too. Nope. Not on the cards at all.

I’ve seen enough to make a decision that there’s some talent with this lad. Great touch and some of his layoffs have been very good. I don’t think Eddie knows what to do with him, I don’t think he quite knows his best position yet and I do think he’s raw as fuck. I also think that if we jettison him now we’ll regret it in a couple of years.

Is a nice touch and some nice lay offs enough for a top 8 PL attacker? Thats Zirkzee, a 20 minute bench player imo.

IMO in the PL you can be a budget Drogba and be a really useful player.  Half PL strikers fit that build.  A budget Berbatov? That doesn’t work here.

What about an attacker for a top 14 team? In all seriousness though I believe it is yes if used properly. Right now as with all of our squad house confidence will be hanging out his arse but this is his first season so it's magnified for him probably. Again, like I said in the Wissa thread I haven't given up on him.

I think Howe needs to try something just a little different and playing Nick as a supporting striker and attempting to play through him some is the path he should take. because there’s no other options.

Or we can just try to run super hard again.

Totally agree - we have fuck all left to play for so get out your confirm zone and try new things, I'd love to see him and wissa up front with Murphy banging crosses in and osalu waiting on the bench if it doesn't work out, preferably to try on the right. The big problem though is at the back - we can't expect our front line to get three goals every game to get the three points. People will probably jump on me but give Pope another run out and say "go get your place back" - at least he's proved he can keep clean sheets.

Berbatov was world class though, and a little more mobile from what I remember. If Nick's natural game is to drift into pockets to collect then create from there can we not fucking work with that? Maybe work on him arriving late in the box type if thing. Frustrating as hell seeing the lack of creativity from the coaching set up

Yes, he mostly played with another striker.

In the under 21s Euros, he was usually paired with Tresoldi or Weiper too if I remember correctly.

Yes, and Nick performed out of this world.

Unfortunately, that won't happen under Howe. He's stubbornly clinging to his unsuccessful system.

Eddie gave up on Nick, so there won't be any change.

I think that’s a bit premature but I am disappointed by how little he’s being used.

I feel a fresh start next season will help Howe be more confident to try things, which is part of the reason I want him to get another year.

For the first three months, Nick played as a center forward. Then Eddie switched him to a more defensive role. And that, in my opinion, was the mistake.

The Premier League is more physical and faster. Nick needs to work hard to adapt to this. His physical attributes aren't such that he'll become a fast player. In my opinion, Nick has no business being in the final third of the pitch. I'd even forbid him from playing there. His territory is the opponent's half. Defensively, Wolte isn't effective anyway. Other players have to cover that for him. Because of his slowness, he's unavailable for counter-attacks and is then missed up front.

But Eddie tried to reshape him, and it backfired. I'm still convinced that if he's used up front, he's a very good player.

But he wasn’t really trying Woltemade in a more defensive role because he thinks he’s good there.

He was trying to get him minutes in the team while still having a pressing player up front, and also cope with injuries in midfield.

I don’t think anyone believes Woltemade is a midfielder or ever will be.

I hope so anyway, anything else is crazy.

That may be true. But in any case, it's definitely brought Nick's form down.

For me, Wolte's place is in attack. I'm willing to accept that others will have to cover his defensive duties. If a counter-attack then develops, he's available for a pass. Unlike some other players, he's capable of playing accurate passes and possesses good game intelligence.

For what it’s worth, didn’t Gordon get player of the tournament in the U21’s playing up front?
