Signings are harder than sales

Absolutely, but at what point do we start to look at the owners and the strategy there?

Ashworth, Mitchell and now Wilson. These people aren’t clowns, but the pattern remains.

This is a club issue imo.

You (and most fans) won’t accept the alternative strategy though. Because the alternative strategy is almost certainly buy even earlier and younger and in markets where the risk profile is higher. And when you do that, you may well get some superstars in 2-3 years time but they will be very raw to start with. And if you do a summer of those signings, then we’re not competing for Champions League any time soon. Brighton, Bournemouth etc do this strategy very, very well - neither have made the Champions League and most seasons they finish mid table.

We just need to be more aggressive, why wait until he’s at the World Cup? Get in straight away and trigger his clause, if that flushes Liverpool out fine, we’ll know much earlier and won’t  have wasted any more time.

Liverpool and the ESL6 can’t buy every player, they didn’t buy Bruno, Botman or Tonali.

There’s players out there but pull your fucking finger out and act like you mean business.

I think there's this thing where, because were labelled 'richest club in the world' despite the financial restriction placed on us from day 1 of the takeover, they (the owners) have this fear that everyone wants to rip us off and/or hike the fees. Everything seems to be trying to get a deal done, under the rate or below + add-ons.

Not always a bad strategy, but if you want the player hard enough, just pay the going rate or the release clause, and as stated, if it draws out other clubs, at least you find out quicker and can move on. We seem to spend weeks on negotiations, often (well, since last summer) only to get gazumped.

Saudis have been getting ripped off since they struck oil.

Because he isn't very good?

Again, we didn't look for best in class when we appointed him. We specifically looked for someone who can work well with the manager.

Our football expertise stops at Eddie Howe.

Those two things don't follow, even if you know it was true (which you don't).

The DOF has to work well with the manager. That's not some sort of mental decision by PIF, it's a sensible way to build a functioning structure at the club. It doesn't mean that Wilson isn't good or that Howe is all powerful. They had a conversation before the appointment to see if they could work together, which again is a good thing.

The DOF appoints the manager in every other set up. Functional clubs don't look for a DOF The manager likes. Dysfunctional ones do.

It's ok, life is about tradeoffs Ian. But the point remains right? Ross Wilson would not be described as best in class.

Well yeah, the DOF appoints the manager and I'm sure he will appoint the next manager. But Howe was already here.

Howe was basically the only person at the football club with any expertise and had achieved borderline miracles. Would be a bit crazy to not consider him in who else we bring in. It's not like he said "we absolutely shouldn't poach the DOF from Man City".

I have big issues with our way of doing business, but there's nothing to suggest the problem is Wilson when you look at his own track record of getting deals done, even just at Forest.

He was indeed, but do you appoint best in class or so you appoint the guy who gets on with the current manager? That's the decision we were faced with and we made our choice.

It's fine, this isn't a knock on Wilson, if in the coffee boy at forest and the Toon come calling im also driving up

IIRC he made about 50 signings in one window

But I just don't think that's how it works. It's not like they had the world's greatest DOF on the list and Howe refused it. They selected Wilson and they had a conversation to see if the relationship was going to be good.

It's a weird thing to complain about IMO.

Would I like a DOF who used to be at Barcelona? Sure, there's always a better option than what you have.

The nature of where we are and the profile of player we're after always leaves us open to gazumps like Munoz unfortunately. I'll judge Wilson on his ability to pivot - quickly - and lock down our second choice, whoever it may be.

Ki, my issue with Wilson isn't personal.

It's the process which led to his appointment. I wanted someone with extensive contacts in Europe who could play these agents like a fiddle. Someone with top notch acument and instincts  I got a guy who forest binned because they wanted Edu.

Again not a knock on Wilson, just imo the appointment didn't match the stated ambition.

Did he? How many were good?

No idea, Forest rebuilt their whole squad. I'm sure there's a list out there.

it's not really his job to find players, it's his job to put processes in place and manage the completion of deals.

How many were him and how many was the owner? I don't look at someone like Marinakis and think he has zero input into things.

Anyways never the less, I've got no beef with Wilson and particularly not in relation to the Munoz deal, my point is more general and nature and aimed more towards the structure of the club and the dysfunctional decision making we have.

They didn't bin him, we poached him. And Edu has left Forest

I could just as easily claim that we targeted him because of his track record of getting deals done and early, as you could that he was hired because he gets on with Howe, I'd say the former has more evidence supporting it.

He made 42 signings over his several windows at Forest. Not all great of course, but it's a high number and they're Forest.

Who knows TBH, we don't know he's going to be brilliant and we don't know he's going to be bad. We need more stuff to happen before we can judge that.
